  • A guy I went to high school with had this name. He came from a big irish catholic family and they all had irish names. He was very popular and ended up being the school president. People would call him Sea-muss a lot (instead of shay-muss, the actual pronunciation).
  • Ethnic? No.

It's NMS, but I've heard the name before. He'll definitely be the only Seamus in his class!

  • I would pronounce it See-Mus also. I don't think I've ever heard it before.
  • I love this name, and we thought about using it. But, from someone who has an Irish name that is mispronounced constantly, well my whole life, we have decided against it.
  • I would say so.  Not many will know how to pronounce it correctly.
  • i wouldn't say it's too ethnic, but i'm not a fan of it personally.....
  • I would have mis-pronounced is see-mus as well.  Do you think kids would call him semen?

    But I don't think it's too ethnic.

  • I don't even know how to pronounce it. It's nms at all.
  • I know it's a common Irish name, but it appears not everyone is aware of that.   It's not my style at all though.
  • I think it's very Irish and I'd be a little surprised to find it on someone that wasn't.  It's nms - just something about it... like a combo of semen and mucus (yeah, that's gross).  It also reminds me of the pirate dude on Family Guy with peg arms and legs.

It would depend on your last name.  Seamus Gonzalez or Seamus Cohen, I don't think so.  I think it works best with an Irish last name.

  • I don't see it as any more "ethnic" than Sean, but it's not quite as mainstream in the US as Sean is.  I'd stick with James if you're super worried about people mispronouncing it.

Well, what's "too ethnic" to you?  I would assume that a kid named Seamus has some ties to either Ireland or Scotland.
  • I love Seamus. Yes, it's sounds very Irish to me, but I love it. My cousin has a son named Seamus.
The name also reminds of a uber-hot guy I kissed on in college who had the same name.
  • I like it if you're Irish.
  • if by 'too ethnic' you mean does it scream Irish/Scottish-  then yes, it  does.  I would put it in the category of Finn, Declan, Maeve, Moira.  I don't consider that a bad thing- unless that is something you are trying to stay away from.  Nothing wrong with having an Irish name.

That being said-  I am not a big fan of the name itself, and agree it would be mispronounced a lot.

  • reminds me of Harry potter's classmate- seamus. I love harry potter though so Im all for it!

    (PS pronounced Shay-mus)

  • I don't think it's too ethnic, but I don't like the name.
  • wtf does "too ethnic" mean? Every name is tied to an ethnicity of some kind.

I love the name, but then again, Declan and Siobhan are also favorites of mine too.

    2 girls and a dog
  • It's pronounced Shay-mus or Shay-mas and has the cute nn of Shay.  My BFF's brother is named Seamus and I love it.  But he is Irish (first generation American) and has a last name that flows well with it.
  • I love it! I love Irish names...

  • I like it, but I also live in Mass, and Irish names are pretty common. ?I would go for it. It seems odd to me that there are people who wouldn't know how to pronounce it, and I wouldn't let it phase you.
  • I have two co-workers whose dogs are named that so I have a hard time thinking of it for a baby.  That is just me though  =)

  • I absolutely love it, I may be partial though since my Dad and brother are both Seamus. It's a great name and I wish I could use it. And FWIW we are Irish but with a polish last name.

  • I think it is a great name. If people can not pronounce it they will learn. My dh is from Ireland and I like a lot of Irish names. Go for it!

This for me, too. Although I do know how to pronounce it after seeing Harry Potter. And that may not be the assoc you want. Stick out tongue

  • Nope, I know two. Both are definitely Irish but I think it's a cute name.

    agreed.

  • I'm surprised people think it would be mispronounced so often ?and/or have never seen it before. I've see the name many times before. I kind of like it :)

I've never heard ?anyone say 'sea-mus', just as I haven't heard anyone ever say 'seen' for Sean.
