Question about limiting the TV.

If you have a toddler/preschooler and you limit their TV watching, is your child or are your children conscious of the fact that they aren't allowed to watch certain shows or aren't allowed to watch on demand?  Are there times they want you to turn on the TV and you tell them no?  Are there certain shows that are desired but forbidden?

There are always times that T wants me to turn on the TV and I tell him no. He would watch it all day long if I let him. However, he only asks for certain shows and I simply tell him "Diego/Yo Gabba Gabba/Dora isn't on right now." However, if he has just watched back-to-back episodes of Diego and requests a 3rd, I tell him "No more Diego. We are going to do something else." I feel this is important b/c I feel that, as he gets older, he does need to know there are limits.

There are no shows that he asks for that are forbidden but that is largely because he has only been exposed to shows that I think are acceptable. Thomas videos, Sesame Street and Noggin are the only things he's ever seen and, therefore, the only things he asks for.

ditto rayskit, there are a lot of times when i tell maddy "no" or "no more".

she's not really a couch potato, though.  like now, she asked for it, but 5mins. in she is playing with her toys.  she likes the background noise, though, bc if you turn it off, she totally notices from across the room!

Oh yes, this. But I've learned that I can switch it to a music channel or even to a grown-up channel (HGTV or Food Network) and she won't really notice.

But I have to confess, Eloise is a Caillou addict. She wants to watch it first thing when she wakes up - and we usually let her. But then she wants more and more... and gets told no. Although on a day like today when we can't go to the park and can't go anywhere else because we're waiting on a repairman... well, the only reason I'm on the Nest right now is because I put Caillou back on.

There are no shows that she wants to watch that are forbidden because she's never seen anything but Sprout or Noggin.

But with SS, when he was younger (say 7y-11y), there were many shows that were forbidden that he wanted to watch either because of violence or rude behaviors on the show. Most of the shows were banned by his mom, but I absolutely agreed with her on almost all of them - Ren and Stimpy, Beavis and Butthead, some of the more violent anime shows (he was very prone to nightmares even as old as 10-11yo). The only one she forbid that I wouldn't have was the Simpsons. And although I know he wanted to watch some of those shows, I never caught him cheating and he would say "I'm not allowed to watch this" and change the channel or leave the room.

What the eff is Caillou?  We were with friends this weekend who had kids that wanted to watch this.  My thought...what kind of freaking cartoons are these kids watching???  What happened to Bugs Bunny!  It was an interesting show, but I thought the kids were asking for Ky U (as in university).  So out of it.

  • Owen requests the Cars movie a lot recently, so if I oblige, it is for 30 minutes of it. ?I do prefer him to watch something that is somewhat educational, though, and there is a long list of those that he requests (spoiled by the DVR) - Thomas, Diego, Sesame Street, Imagination Movers, Handy Manny. ?We usually limit it to 1 or 2 shows in the morning and sometimes 1 show when he gets up from nap - but some days he gets less. ?On days one of us is sick, the tv is on a lot more. ?We limited it a lot in the beginning, so I sometimes feel like we watch too much, especially since the Astros season has started!?

Caillou is a show about a 4 yr old lil boy and his sister Rosie on PBS/Sprout.  Kaitlyn LOVES Caillou.  Personally, I think the lil boy is whiney and annoying. lol

Did you know that Caillou means "pebble" in French, but it also can mean "bald head?"

I also find that show annoying. Not just Caillou, but the narration too. I just can't handle it.  Luckily my kids never really got into it!

we haven't watched it just in case she likes it. "caillou didn't want to play ball, caillou doesn't like to draw, caillou has something new to whine about today..." but i'm mean enough to not turn on barney either for fear she'll like it.

we don't have noggin we watch PBS and Disney. and I never thought I'd like disney, but i love the no commercials on the club house shows.

  • Not really. TIVO makes the world a different place - there is no spontaneous TV. Just TIVO.

Of course, he thinks all shows can be paused, played multiple times, etc.

**The pause button has been useful in negotiating - he knows if he is not compliant with fingernail clipping time, then the TV will freeze.

me, too!!  maddy has seen it at my sil's house bc my niece LOVES it... but thank god she's never asked for it... she's never watched it at home, so maybe she thinks it's only available at my sil's!

ditto on the pause button & negotiating!!

  • Kendall is often told NO, but she really doesn't seem to matter. The only thing she's ever sat ALL THE WAY THROUGH and actually watched with full attention is a 12 min. episode of Curious George.

I have friends who say their child (the same age as K) will sit through an entire Disney movie uninterrupted....which I don't see how that is possible. My child gets way too distracted and moves on to other things...no WAY would she watch TV for 1.5 hrs. straight....even if I DID let her!
