Trying to Get Pregnant

Any teacher's here ever written a grant before?

I am trying to and its not going so well. Its for $500 to go towards my classroom library. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Any teacher's here ever written a grant before?

  • I'm not a teacher but I did take a grant writing workshop last year.  We haven't had the chance to write up any because we couldn't find any that matches what we are looking for!  Maybe you're looking in the wrong place?

  • You probably have to put it in the context of an overall "project" that the kids will do with the books, if it's like any grants that I've written. ?Be specific about what the kids will do. ?Come up with a catchy title. ?It can make all the difference. ?

Who will be judging the entries??

  • I am not a teacher, I am Librarian but I write grants all the time. For most of mine, they want to see some sort of quanifiable result. The money people want to know how much their money will benefit the kids. Personal stories, how money or whatever has improved a situation in the past always helps too.

You could use some generic statistics about unassigned reading benefiting kids and a story about a student who improved because of access to the materials in your room.

  • We have specific things we have to respond/ answer.

Ex: Describe the experience in your classroom that characterizes your approach to teaching reading.

Describe how students will be involved in the creation of the library and/or selection of the books.

Attach a detailed budget which lists the books

Describe a checkout/ in system you plan to use

How would funding of your classroom library grant affect your teaching?

I think I am thinking too much and need to go with what I know rather then worrying about it being perfect.

Yes, I remember learning that it needed to be specific and what desired outcome of this grant would be.

This is great advice.  She knows what she's talking about!

This for sure! It seems small but it really matters.

  • Are there guidelines for the grant?  Follow those very specifically.  If they have a bunch to go through they will weed them out fast with people that don't follow specific guidelines.

edit: I'm so damn blind today.  I didn't see your other reply.

It seems you're on the right track here.  I'm sure the librarian (I forgot your SN sorry!!) would have something to comment about that.  If I was reviewing a grant, I would probably ask those questions.

Yes, they often toss any that don't follow the rules. ?Since there are specific questions just do the best you can to give specifics in each area. ?Tell exactly what you think your check out system will be (even if you have to tweak it a little bit later). ?

Make sure the books you choose support what you say you are trying to accomplish and explain how when you are explaining how it will affect your teaching. ?

And make sure you get someone to proof read it. ?No matter how many times you read it yourself, it's so easy to miss a mistake, which can really turn off folks reading the applications (especially when they come from teachers).

not being snarky but be sure to double check your grammar (i think you meant teachers/ it's). i'm sure that is something they will use to weed out certain people for sure.

i hope you get it, the kids will enjoy the books!

yea teaching K & 1st grade I don't teach grammer besides capitals & periods. Infact we don't do spelling either. The kids write the sounds they hear. So i don't pay much attention to it a lot of the time. and i am lazy on here and hit post before rereading.

it actually does help. i know of many people who have lost job opportunities, etc. because they didn't pay attention to their grammar or spelling.

Well, Spink...I guess if you misspell some shiit, get fired and lose the grant, this chick will be able to say "Told you so!".

you fail. seriously. ?you honestly believe that her grammar on this internet message board is any reflection of how she would write a grant? ?let me introduce you to the internet....??

    This.

In addition, a helpful tip would have been: "Make sure to proofread your grammar and spelling before sending it in."  Nice, good tip.

Being snarky and rude is:  Bolding grammatical errors in a freaking post.  Basically, what you did.

  • I kind of agree with pp about making sure your grammar and spelling are correct. Not trying to be rude either, but it can just be distracting.

Limon- that wasn't rude at all.  :)  That's exactly how that advice should  be given nicely.

    :)
