I'm scared to death about this swine flu

I know I am a walking panic attack on a regular day, but this is the kind of crap that could quickly make me agoraphobic. I work with kids everyday.. many that have families that travel to and from Mexico. This is just the kind of thing I worry about and its actually happening for real.

Also, God forbid my daughter (3 years old) were to get it, does anyone know if Tamiflu is safe for that age group?? That is a concern of mine. I am also worried about them running out. ?

I know there is no control and thankfully so far everyone is recovering here, but I can't help being so scared. This is a living nightmare for someone with severe anxiety disorder.

How will it ever go away?? It will just slowly diminish or what?? And will this be something that goes around every year now??

  • The regular, seasonal flu kills over 35,000 people in the US each year. I would be more worried about that. Not that these things aren't concerns, but the media has a wee bit of a tendency to sensationalize.

  • I know the feeling. My co-worker was making fun of me because I've become a bit obsessed. We just returned from spring break and some kids went to Mexico on vaca. - I reminded them to wash their hands often. I'm more fearful for my kids than for myself.

  • Really? No one else is concerned? It does seem a bit silly because the symptoms are no different than the symptoms of any other strain of the flu virus, but the media does not help.
  • You should probably purchase some of those Outbreak style biohazard suits.

And then wear it around town.  You know, so the people in your town can recognize you as a lunatic and steer clear.

I too am worried for Jake (the DS) but you just have to keep living your daily life & don't let it consume you.
Get some Vicks early defense hand sanitizer & pretend it keps you safe (thats what I do)

Just think of it like flu season
    Is it really any different?

  • I just fell out of my chair.  I may have broken something.  OMG.

And seriously, the media is blowing this WAYYYYYYY out of proportion.  So many thousands of people die from the regular flu every year.  This is nothing compared to that.

I am not concerned b/c nobody is dying!  They are getting sick and getting better.  Just like happens 230984 a day normally.

I know the mexican cases are causing all kinds of chaos but it's STILL not clear what went on there.  The fact is that people here who are getting sick are getting better.  Quickly.  It's just not a big deal at this point, IMO.

Bubblytoes- I am not being a smartass but didn't you post something yesterday about this freaking you out since you are in the medical profession and know what could potentially happen? Just wondering if and why something has changed your mind? Is it really just being hyped up I mean?

Tamiflu is approved for adults and children aged 1 year and older. Just thought I'd let ya know. This is why stuff gets crazy and shiz, cause people blow things out of proportion. You can die from just about anything.

Amen Zenya. People are dying in Mexico because they are seeking help too late. And they dont have the medicine that we do here in US.

  • Nope, that wasn't me.  I'm not freaked out about it at all.  And yes, it's just being hyped up.  Seriously.  More people die from regular, plain old influenza.  Swine flu?  Not so much.

  • I remember what I was referring to, it was a global pandemic, yes, but I don't believe the swine flu is what's going to wipe out civilization as we know it.  Something WILL come along sooner or later that will take out plenty of people.  This?  Is not it.

  • This thread made me choke on my cookie. It was a damn good cookie too.

In all seriousness, Swine flu has the potential to be a threat. POTENTIAL. Just like lots of other things over the years. People panicking and storming their clinic demanding tamiflu isn't going to help anything. ITS NUTS. Wash your hands some more and keep updated on the cases, maybe take yourself to the doctor if you are truly exhibiting symptoms, but acting like sane adults is the best way to approach this. Of course, sane is something a lot of people are lacking, these days.

Dude, all Nancy Grace talks about is Casey Anthony.  She'll pick up on the pig flu sometime next year.  LOL

And I'm waiting on someone to come in here and tell us we're all a bunch of meanies.
