Mirror for rear-facing baby behind driver???

OK, I must be stupid.  Help!

I want to have my DS in his rear facing car seat behind me in our minivan because I am super neurotic and have this fear that i am going to have to swerve the car one way or another in an accident and choose to injure him or me.  If we are on the same side, then I know (in my crazy mind) that I can smash up the passenger side and keep us safe.

Also, it's easier if we're both getting in and out on the same side.

Now, I NEED to have a mirror to see him.  is it possible to set up mirrors  to see your DC behind you?  My van has no built in mirrors.  I have the rainforest mirror that i used in the previous car when i had him on the other side but it doesn't work for having him behind me.

We have another year of rear facing so i'd really like to find a solution without moving him forward facing.

  • They have little mirrors that can stick to your rear view mirror so you could move it to reflect what's in the rain forest mirror..... Wow, that's a lot of mirrors.  But yeah... i think that'd be your best bet.

  • DS carseat is behind me in my car.  i have a padded safefit mirror attached to the headrest in front of DS.  i just raised the headrest all the way up and angled the mirror itself down towards the carseat and i can see him just fine:

  • we had the pp mirror, but it didn't work great.  DH picked one up at BRU that is a circle and even has a little remote that works a little light on the top of the mirror so you can use it in the dark.  It worked great, I think because it's a circle, it worked like a bubble mirror on tractor trailers or suv's?  HTH

  • Why doesn't it work? We have a mirror in front of ds on the headrest, and he is behind the drivers seat, and I can see him just fine in the mirror with my rearview mirror.

  • they are dangerous. if you got into a crash it would shatter on your babies face.
  • It's best to have him in the middle. And then you don't have to make that choice.
  • It works better on the diagonal of the driver--ie the passenger side

BabiesRUs/Target/WalMart etc sell these mirrors that slip over the car's headrest so you can see the child while rear-facing--about $15--well worth it
