What age should DC point?

I was looking for this on a list of milestones but couldn't find it. DS doesn't point so I'm wondering if I should be concerned.

I saw it on the infant ability profile for DD's daycare for 12 - 18 mos. I think they start to point around 12 mos. but I think it's a considered a milestone to be hit within that time frame rather than by 12 mos.

What?? I don't think this is true. My pedi didn't ask and my son is not pointin with his index finger yet but has hit all other milestones. Where are you getting this information.

His 12m appt is tomorrow. Does this mean that my DS is slow or something? Fvck, now I'm worried.?

DD doctor didn't ask about pointing at 12 months but I did get a number of other questions. I have the list in her babybook but he didn't ask. If you are worried ask tomorrow but something tells me its a range and 12 months is the beginning.

DD's pedi asked about pointing at her 12 month appointment. Oh, she points, all right. It's her main method of communication (I want that. No, mommy, that! ::points more and more insistently::)

You shouldn't worry, though. My DD is super-slow developing most motor skills, but it's just her way. She did a month with a physical therapist and caught on to stuff very quickly. I worried so much before that, but seeing her grasp her "lessons" so well made me realize that 99% of the time babies develop what they're interested in; it's not that they can't do something, it just doesn't interest them.

The nurse asked when she was going over the checklist at DD's 12 month appt. At the time I hadn't noticed her pointing ever, so I said "No not really" and a couple days later I all of a sudden noticed her starting to point at stuff. Neither the nurse or Dr. said anything about her not pointing though. I wouldn't worry about it!

Really? I find this hard to believe. It seems to make more sense that if your kid isn't doing a lot of what's generally done by 12 months, then start asking questions, but if they are only not pointing, I wouldn't' worry.

ETA - comeon, just saw your clarification - I agree with you.

DS just started pointing this week, though he was able to let us know what he wanted without pointing before then. He's 14 months. hth

Does he babble? Wave? Communicate with some other gesture? Pointing is just a big part of early communicative development. If all the other development is there, its unlikely to be a concern, just something to watch for. And obviously, not every kid does things on the standard timeline. Its just something to talk to your pedi about- they'll probably just note it, and ask you about it again at his 15m appointment.

Yeah, he babbles all day long. He is great at language comprehension and can follow 2 step directions. He waves bye-bye and lots of other things, just no pointing.?

I am sorry but your post made me laugh a little. My son is ahead of the game in almost all milestones..walked at 10 months, has a 15 word vocab, climbs on everything etc... I guess he needs to be furthur evaluated now because he did not start pointing appropriately until 14 months...haha Your fine!!!

DS did not start pointing until maybe 13 months. Most of what he points at are animals in books and lights on the ceiling. He is on target for everything else. It is interesting how babies develop so differently from each other, yet all turn out fine in the end.

I noticed DD pointing at something today, but honestly, I had no idea it was a milestone. I don't think I point very much, so maybe since she doesn't see me doing it she doesn't do it either. I don't think you need to worry.
