About five months ago, one of friends that gave birth this month had asked DH what name we were going to give DS. He told her that we had picked Preston George as his name and she said, "Oh, that is a nice name, I like the name Preston." Well, when she had her baby, she decided that she wanted to name him Preston. DH and I are still very in love with the name. Would you have a problem using the name even though a friend, whom you saw on a regular basis, gave her son the same name?

this exactly!
and if she does say anything, she got the name from you in the first place.
(What a low blow on her part.) But you should keep it! -you love it!
You know... I'd like to know what her reaction is/will be to you still using it. if it's "Yeah- how cute that our kids will have the same name!", then all is good. She didn't do it to 'steal' it. She used the name because she really liked it but doesn't think twice about you still using it.
If her reaction is anything even close to being upset, THEN I'd be pissed. While I don't feel people can truly claim names, it IS messed up for her to use it knowing it's the name you picked out and then to get pissed when you still use it.
But if she doesn't care, then she didn't think you claimed it and she wasn't claiming it!

You can definitely still use it if it is your favorite name. I personally would choose something else because I wouldn't want our kids to have the same name - but that is a personal preference. It is different when they meet later on, but knowing ahead of time, I wouldn't do it.
I have got to say though - people know names are important to those choosing it - she should NEVER have used that name. There are tons of names out there - she could have done one that you didn't already say you wanted to use.
