Working Moms

How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?

I'm going to "practice" for a few days before we start daycare (he goes at 6 weeks) but he's still cluster feeding at times. Seriously I think i'll need to get up 3 hours before I leave!

I'll try to cut down time by packing my lunch and his diaper bag the night before, but it just seems like time flies in the morning.

  • When I first went back to work (when DD was 4 months) and was nursing I was really lucky.  I could get out of the house in about 45 minutes.  I could sometimes do it in less if I took breakfast with me and she nursed faster.

Now that she's older and fighting me every step of the way to leave it can take anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half.  Its usually closer to the hour and a half. . . Aand I'm exhausted by the end of it.  I don't have a happy to get up kind of kid.

  • 1/2 hour for both of us.  It's a mad rush!  I pack his stuff at night.  I take a shower at night so I literally brush my teeth and throw on clothes.  DS sleeps while I get ready and then I wake him (he'd sleep until 9am!).  I get ds dressed while he's still groggy and by the time he's completely awake, he's in the stroller and we're ready to go.  DS has a bottle and a banana on the subway.  When he really eats cereal and other sit down foods, we'll have to revise our schedule - but for now all he wants is food he can eat anywhere.  I eat breakfast at work (ok- drink- diet coke).

  • 1.5 hours.  I get myself ready and normally in the midst of doing so DS gets up so I feed him.  I then pump, pack the pump and run.  DH is a SAHD, so I don't have to do daycare.
  • We have a nanny so I don't have to worry about getting him ready and getting his things together.  Right now, DS wakes up at around 6 am and we bring him into bed with us.  He nurses and falls back to sleep until 7/7:30 or so and then nurses more.  We all get out of bed at around 7:40 and I change his diaper, jump in the shower and I'm out the door by 8:15.   This process has changed a lot though since I've been back at work (since Dec).  As he grows, his schedule and needs change and we just adapt to whatever he needs.

I always took showers and got dressed first thing in the morning when I was on maternity leave. I think it helped me a lot because I never felt like it was a PITA to get ready in the morning for work.

  • When my DD was a newborn it took us about 2 hours to get out of the house.  I liked not feeling super rushed to feed her.  As she has gotten older we still take that time to eat breakfast together and play in the morning.

  • I'm just in my second week of doing this but so far it is working well.  I usually get up about an hour and a half at least before I have to leave.  I get up and get as much of myself ready as I can before ds gets up.  He wakes up and I feed him then go back to what I was doing while he is either on his bouncy chair or playmat next to me.  This usually gives me a little time to hang out with him without feeling rushed in the mornings.

  • I futz around way too much in the mornign, but if I don't, my whole day is shot.  I get up around 5:30 and get myself dressed, have coffee and breakfast and have a few minutes to myself (sometimes I throw in some laundry or empty the dishwasher too), get DD up around 6:15-6:30 and feed and change her and then play until 7 or so.  If I'm super sleep deprived, I may sleep in until 6 or so and its slightly more frantic, but I can still get out a little after 7.

My goal is leave the house by 6:50 - so far, this has not happened once in the month I've been back . . .oh well!

  • Workout Mornings: Up at 4:45, workout and in the shower around 5:30.  Get dressed, dry hair, cup of coffee and make DD's breakfast for Daycare.  Get DD up around 6:30 and get her dressed while DH walks the dog.  I leave for work around 6:40 and DH drops off at daycare.

Non workout Mornings:  I sleep in WAY too late.  Usually up around 6:00 and rush to get ready, pack for daycare.  Get DD up around 6:45 and don't get out the door until after 7.

My mornings are much smoother, less frantic when I get my lazy a$$ out of bed!

Holy crap!  You go!  I feel like such a lazy ass now. I don't get out of bed until 7:40!  Even when DS wakes up earlier I lay in bed and play with him.

  • I'm just baffled that you're all getting your LO up!  DD gets US UP between 5-6am.  She's our alarm clock!  She usually comes to bed with me for a little while.  Then we get up and have a bottle.  I get in the shower around 7:30am with her in the bathroom, singing every song I can think of to entertain her while I shower and put on makeup.  I'm ready by 8:10-ish.  I get her dressed and we play for a little while or sometimes she'll be ready to go back down for a nap.  Nanny shows up at a little before 9am and I'm out the door.
  • DH gets up with Jacob while I shower and dress, then I come down and we get him ready and I take Jacob to daycare. DH stays home and gets ready for work. I remember the early days though, I used to worry about how we'd get out of the house but somehow we managed. We just took turns getting ready and I tried to make sure everything was set out the night before. You'll figure out what works for you!
  • About 1.5 hours. DS usually wakes up at 6am and I feed him. Then I take a shower while he sits on his bouncer in the bathroom and I sing to him (as pp said, any song I can think of...). Then I get dressed and pack my pump and the last few things in the diaper bag, change DS if I didn't do that after his breakfast and we leave for DC.

  • i went back to work when ds was 3 months old, he was watched by sil so i would pack the diaper bag the night before, wake in the morning before him shower, get dressed, wake ds around 7:15 get him dressed and out the door we would go and sil fed him when he got there about 7:30ish.

now that he is older things are different.  he goes to daycare 3 days a week.  the mornings he goes to daycare he eats breakfast before he leaves.  so he wakes about 7am get dressed and eats breakfast.  i finish getting dressed while he is eating and then we leave.   i pack as much as possible the night before.  the other two days he still goes to sil and he eats breakfast there.

my advice, do as much as possible the night before it really helps the mornings go smooth.

  • I get up, shower, dry hair, pack bags into car and wake up DS, get him dressed, sit with him for a few minutes to talk and we are out the door in 50 minutes.  He eats breakfast at daycare.  For me to get ready and be out the door, it only takes 30 minutes.
  • I am soo slow to get ready! I get up at 6 and get showered and dressed/hair/makeup. Sometime around 6:45-7ish, DD wakes up and I get her up and bring her in our room while I finish getting ready. Then I get her changed and dressed and we go downstairs and get some milk and sometimes a snack to bring in the car (she eats b-fast at daycare). We leave the house around 7:45. So um...yeah, almost 2 hours. I have no idea how this will work when #2 comes along.
