2nd Trimester

Reason #275934846 why I hate teaching middle school.

Many students today have been grating my nerves with not doing their work, not coming into class in dress code and generally thinking that the school year is over and rules don't apply to them anymore because it is April.

One class comes in and are already talking, not doing work, etc. in the first 3 minutes. I say "y'all are all getting on my nerves today" and one of them goes "that's because you're pregnant."

I HATE that they think that I'm being hard/strict on them because I'm pregnant- I've been like this for the past 3 years! It's just so ignorant of them to assume anytime I'm irritated it's because of hormones and not because they are actually doing something wrong... arg.

  • Get out, I was literally JUST about to write a post about this. The very same situation. I was a royal fVcking B!TCH to my students today, but I really can't make myself feel bad about it. These effing kids are not only lazy and obnoxious, but also totally clueless.

I can't wait to leave the building....

  • I am so SO right there with you!! I teach 7th and 8th grade and one of my kids came in late, after being gone for 13 straight unexcused days, walked in yelling and causing a scene and when I got on his case he actually had the nerve to say... "You've got to watch those hormones Mrs. T." I about flew off the handle... I am counting down the days until summer...
  • I think you need to rethink your career. Suprise kids do things adults don't like and they break rules.

  • I don't know how you do it, teenagers deserve a throat punch.
  • Its even worse when its the parents. I sent a student to the office today for swearing on the playground and his parents actually complained to the principle that I was to hard on him because of my hormones! (I student teach in a third grade class)
  • This is why I will never teach middle school...

Oh it's no surprise -- I don't think any of us is expressing shock here. We are simply venting because teaching is as frustrating some days as it is rewarding others. I'm sure OP has a list at least as long of reasons why she loves teaching middle school.

Let a girl vent, okay? That's one of the purposes for this board.

and DITTO. And did you read the post I wrote last week about one of the PARENTS telling me that his daughter said I had "changed on them" now that I was pregnant? Um... OR your daughter is constantly talking, fighting and in trouble and you don't want to admit it.

I agree... I love my job (most of the time) and I wouldn't want to do anything else. But sometimes my kids make me want to commit murder 1 and it's nice to hear that I'm not alone. Especially in the spring when they get all wacky and "hormonal". Ha! I should turn the hormone argument around on them and call them out for going through puberty... that'd go over well with admin!

Sometimes the parents are worse than the kids... you ever wonder where you they get it?!? Wink

  • Ugh that sounds so frustrating!  I have no idea what it's like to teach jr. high kids, but I can't really believe that they think it's ok to talk to an adult, especially their TEACHER so disrespectfully.  And what are you supposed to do when their parents are the ones teaching them that it's ok?  I'm sorry you have to deal with that.

FWIW I have worked with teenagers with disabilities so you can shove your whining about the kids you teach.

Um, wow. ?Have you ever met a teacher who never complained about their students? ?Seriously? ?We can love our careers, but that doesn't mean we have to love every day or that students never get on our nerves. ?

As for the OP, that sucks! ?I had a really hard day at school as well, and summer can't get here fast enough!?

  • I completely agree! I love my job most days, but these past few have been trying esp. b/c parents are agreeing that I'm hormonal b/c I don't want their children cursing in class, or talking back to teachers. My teacher vent of the day, I had a parent upset  with me (blaming it on my hormones) 4 giving their child a detention for their child forging a parent signature on a form, if I was the parent my child would have some serious punishment coming their way. BTW working with special needs children is not the same as being a full time educator in a classroom. I know, I have done both and believe me, most days the special needs students are a lot more well behaved.

  • I screamed at my HS kids today they were awful!! All of them talking while groups gave presentations they were awful today. ?Another teacher came up to me and said her kids were even worse. Its the weather they think if the sun is out school is over. Grrrr
  • I saw this post when I got home and laughed.  I teach 6th grade and just today told them "I'm so done with you guys".  The disrespect, laziness and rudeness they show to adults and each other is pathetic.  I had a sub Friday and they were like animals.  They are paying for it big time.  Good thing I'm pregnant, I'm in b*tch mode.
