Cord Blood?

Anyone ever looked into this or done any research?  I keep seeing commercials on TLC for the Cord Blood Registry.  Just wondering what everyone's opinions are on this.

Re: Cord Blood?

  • I haven't looked much into it. I know it is pretty expensive. Up front and also yearly for the lab to keep the blood.

My SIL had her daughter's cord blood banked. That was about 6 years ago now.

I heard its really expensive. I think I'd rather donate; but I'll have to look into it more
  • I have seen those commercials too and in magazine advertisements.  I am all for stem cell use.  So having your childrens on reserve if anything should happen may be a good idea.
  • Almost everyone that has been saved or helped by cord blood received it from a public bank that is supplied via donations. It costs ~1500 to bank privately (if your doc is associated with the cord blood bank and more if they are not) Plus a storage cost of $200/yr.

We'll donate, knowing other people have done the same, hoping someone can use ours if we don't need it, and vice versa.

Phew!  That is a lot of money.  Didn't realize you could donate!  I'll definitely have to look into that....well, when the time comes!

we'll be doing this as well.
  • I think we'd bank ours, because our child would be multi-ethnic I would be afraid that if our child needed it we wouldn't be able to find a suitable donor.  I'd love to donate it but my fears I think would prevent that.

  • Here is some info for you... Also many of you are talking about donating, but not all hospitals do/take donations. That might be something you want to check out when picking a hospital for delivery. Personally, I donated.?

The odds that the average baby without risk factors will ever use his or her own banked cord blood is considered low; however, no accurate estimates exist at this time. The expense of collecting and storing the cord blood can be a deciding factor for many families. At a commercial cord-blood bank, you'll pay approximately $1,000-$2,000 to store a sample of cord blood, in addition to an approximately?$100 yearly maintenance fee. You might also pay an additional fee of several hundred dollars for the cord-blood collection kit, courier service to the cord-blood bank, and initial processing.

In most cases, stem cell transplants are performed only on children or young adults. The larger the size of the person, the more blood-forming stem cells are needed for a successful transplant. Umbilical cord blood stem cells aren't adequate in quantity to complete an adult's transplant.?

  • I really think we will do this because I am a cancer survivor. For me, the peace of mind is worth the cost.
