Please help! LO needs to take a bottle!

I posted this on 0-6 over the weekend, but I thought I might get some more ideas here...

My DD is almost 12 weeks old.  She's EBF and we've been giving her a bottle of BM about two or three times a week (with no problems) since she was 6 weeks old.  I go back to work in two days and all of a sudden she refuses to take a bottle!

I've never been the one to give her the bottle - it's always been DH or grandparents.  We've tried different positions, different bottle nipples, trying to give it to her when she's very hungry, not very hungry - everything we can think of.  I'm completely out of ideas!

People have been telling us that if she gets hungry enough, she'll take a bottle, and I know that might be true, but I hate to think of what she'll go through before she gets to that point!  I really can't put off going back to work, so I'm asking for any ideas or suggestions you have to get her to take a bottle asap!

TIA!

  • I'm in the exact same situation and haven't found the answer yet.  Although Kate will "play with" the Adiri bottle's nipple in her mouth, and occasionally take an ounce or so from it.  Have you tried that bottle?

I only have to go back to work for 2 weeks, and my MIL may have to feed her with a dropper.  She takes her medicine great from that.  People have suggested a sippy cup to me, but I think our LO's are too little for that.

I just posted on BOTB about this (Bad Bottle Post) and they offered a few suggestions.

Good luck, and let me know if you find the magic answer!

  • No suggestions here, it sounds like you are doing all the right things. DS hates the bottle and does a lot of reverse cycling where he eats very little during the day and nurses a lot at night to make up for it. GL!
  • We are in the same boat.  DS has refused a bottle - I am not going back to work but do need to be away for occasional feedings and can't figure out why the change.  I might call the Pedi's LC and ask her.  If I get some info I will post it.

  • My son was the same way I bf for 13 months..when he would stay with his grandparents for the day he wouldn't eat until he got so hungry he had too...it is easier when your not around ..if DD would try to give him a bottle while I was there our son would look at him like he was crazy lol
  • in the same boat where DD wont take any bottles.  (one of the reasons it helped that i decided to SAH...) -- i know people who have used a dropper, or a spoon, to get whatever they could into the baby's mouth.  maybe try that?

i also tried the Adiri bottle that the pp suggested and she'll play with it and start to drink but not for long (it looks like a boob - the reviews on BRU are all very positive so maybe try that?)... oh also have you tried latex vs silicone nipples? maybe your LO has a preference...

i also read you can warm up the nipple first (run under warm water) or soak it in BM before offering to your baby... didn't work for us...

  • well, ds took a bottle fine the first few weeks and somewhere along the line decided he wouldnt do it anymore- even a bottle of breast milk and i had to go back to work last week- needless to say i was freaking out.  i read in on of the baby books i have that it takes three days to make a change, with the first day being the hardest.  i should have started earlier, but 4 days before i went back to work i put just one ounce of bm into a bottle and dh spent over an hour with ds screaming to get him to take that one little ounce- and we tried every nipple out there, seriously.  he ended up liking the gerber nuk that we had been using before i bought the million other bottles...

after he calmed down and took that one once, i nursed him.

the second day he took an ounce in aabout 30 minutes with quite a fuss but not the full fledged screaming of the day before.

on the third day he took 2 ounces in 15 minutes with no fuss at all- yes i was in shock!!!  now he does fine with his bottles, and he still nurses great too- he gives me HUGE smiles when he gets to nurse if he has had a few bottles that day-

so for us it was just a matter of having one terrible hour of literally non stop screaming- i tried to give in multipe times in that hour but dh was strong for me on that first day- thank goodness- it is so nice to be able to give ds bottles when we are traveling ect. and on the days i work.
