Trying to Get Pregnant

Boy or Girl?

I seen in Walgreens ad where they now have a test that will tell you weather u r having a girl or boy. Has anyone ever heard of this? How would that work?

Re: Boy or Girl?

  • I saw that in the sunday sale ads a few weeks ago. I was wondering the same thing.

  • It reads what you really want more and tells you what you want to hear...

Seriously, I think it's crap. If you want to know what the gender is, get an u/s.

  • How would that even work? Seems like BS to me

The test works by analyzing fetal DNA that leaks into the mother?s bloodstream. Some experts expressed doubts about the technique. ?The earlier in pregnancy that you do these tests, the less fetal DNA there will be around, and possibly, the less accurate the test will be,? said Dr. Patrick O?Brien, a consultant obstetrician and spokesperson for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. ?At six weeks of pregnancy, it?s questionable whether the technology is that good.? Parents willing to wait longer can get a head-to-toe ultrasound at 20 weeks that is almost 100 percent accurate. Invasive procedures like an amniocentesis ? which carry a small risk of miscarriage ? can be done at about 11 weeks. Test not regulated Parents who order the Pink or Blue test receive a packet where the mother provides a spot of blood on a special card. That is sent back to the company?s laboratories, and within four to six days, the gender of the fetus is revealed with up to 98 percent accuracy if instructions are properly followed, according to DNA Worldwide. Because the test is marketed as ?informational? rather than medical, it is not regulated by health authorities in Britain or abroad.

The test works by detecting fetal DNA that can naturally be found in the mother?s blood. It looks for the male-specific Y chromosome. If the Y chromosome is detected, the fetus is a boy. If not, it?s a girl.

The Pink or Blue test is based on a method developed by Italian researchers, who published their research in the journal Human Genetics in 2005. They claimed the Y-chromosome could be reliably identified in the mother?s bloodstream as early as six weeks into pregnancy.

DNA Worldwide offers customers a money-back guarantee if their results prove to be wrong. Of the hundreds of tests sold since the test went on sale in April, Nicholson says they have only had to refund one customer.

  • I would not waste my money on this.
  • Sorry if TMI - but you asked.  LOL Big Smile
  • It is very controversial and not shipped to China for fear of gender selection abortions and abuse of the product.  Especially where I'm sure it is crap.  With a 50/50 chance, how can their success rate NOT be decent?  I say just be patient and wait until the u/s.  Although I know I will be anxious to know, I can't think of any reason other than curiousity to really need to know that soon.
  • Really? The things people come up with. I wouldnt trust it.

I'm giving him some time to think about it (I'm over my initail feeling of uber baby feaver after a friend was showing concern on not knowing if they will be able to have their house when the baby comes), but I'll revisit the issue with him closer to the end of this pack, I'm only a week in. I know my body will take time to get back to normal anyways. But, I do enjoy bumping more than knotting... it's more interesting and seems to move faster.

  • Aww... I was selfishly hoping you had moved it up! =) Bumping is much faster. Its hard to keep up sometimes!
  • I know! At times I feel ready, but financially we're not where we want to be yet. I'll have my car PIF in a few months and then my salary goes into the house fund. We are looking for 100K for our dpmt and can possibly have that before actually GP, but I love the information and the ppl here and there's always something going on!

    Are you actively TTC now?
