Trying to Get Pregnant

newbie needs advice

Ok i am going to my ob/gyn office next week for my depo injection. in case you didnt see my intro post, we are planning on starting TTC next May. I have heard it can take anywhere from 6 mo to a year coming off depo to have regular (or somewhat reg) cycles.

Keeping in mind that the depo shot last three months, should this be my last one, or should i get one more in Aug (meaning i would be "protected" until Nov)? We have already discussed that when i go off depo we will start charting to TTA until May. I am currently reading TCOYF now.......

Re: newbie needs advice

  • are you and your DH opposed to condoms in addition to charting?

  • If it were me, I wouldnt get another one.  After reading TCOYF, the things I learned, I would have gotten off BCP a long time ago.  It has been extremely rough adjusting.  I would TTA, through charting.  But thats just me.

  • I think it's a personal decision, but I would stop with this one and use another form of protection while charting. Your cycles can be screwy for a while and if you want to get a jump start on knowing what's going on then I think it would be your best bet. Good luck!!

  • I DESPISE DEPO!!!!  It takes 12 weeks for the shot to be rendered less effective than is considered an method of BC.  It takes several more months for it to leave your system completely.  Don't count on May!

I was going to write how much I HATE Depo as well.. Didn't know those facts, but I do know I hated every minute of being on it for the year I was. You couldn't pay me enough to ever go back on that again =(

  • I would skip the shot and buy some condoms. I stopped BC about a yr before we started trying to regulate my cycles....condoms work.
  • You only know what's truely best for you but I hated DEPO. GL in whatever decision you make.
  • Just my opinion, but I probably wouldn't get another shot.  I would chart TTA and use a back up method.

  • I agree, don't get another shot.  My DH and I have two very close friends who, the female, was on DEPO for awhile and after she got off it, it took them about 2 years or something to get pregnant.  Not to scare you, but I have definitely heard it can take your body awhile to get back to normal.

  • Yeah, not a fan of depo. And if it remains in your body long after (haven't researched that myself), I wouldn't want that in my system when TTC. I suggest charting to avoid, use condoms. Then when you're ready, you're good to go! :)
  • UGH! I hate depo. Don't get me wrong. Loved it while I was on it. Coming off of it has been a very hard adjustment. I would not recommend getting another one. Come off of it, chart, use condoms, etc. Do not expect to get pregnant quickly. it "can" happen, but isnt likely.

Also, youre in Oviedo? Im in Winter Springs!

  • Thanks to everyone for the advice!!!! So, just to be clear, do you all think I should still get my May shot and have that be the last (meaning it would be active BC in my system until Aug), or go off it now???  Part of me really wants to go off it now and start charting..... yes we are a little opposed to condoms just b/c we both really didn't like using them in the past.... although we may chart and use condoms during the fertile times to TTA..... i really like the idea of charting so that i can be aware of potential fertility issues before we even start trying (at least IF problems on my side of things...)

I'm just really confused and not sure what to do. I do love depo in the sense that i don't have the stress, plus i dont get my period, but i do feel like it has other negative effects on me (depression, unstable BP, and other new medical conditions that have recently come up.... not sure if its related or not).

anyway thanks everyone for the advice! i really appreciate it.... let me know if you think i should get the shot in May or just stop alltogether now

  • I don't think you should even get the May shot. The reason you have to get a shot every three months is because the hormones are not there in enough quantity to be "effective" as BC. But there is still some there. Then you add another three months worth on top of what was already there... It just keeps adding on.

I won't even take BC pills after knowing what it's done to me. I was never on Depo, but I thought about and decided it wasn't for me. I'm on my third cycle and 139 days and counting.
