Trying to Get Pregnant

How long before RE?

I'm just curious how long people were TTC before they went to an RE? I was at the Dr last night and he said that if we don't get KU this cycle to make the appt with the RE, that he thinks we'd be good candidates for IUI. I just hope it happens on its own this cycle so I don't need to worry about the IUI.

Re: How long before RE?

  • Usually your doctor will have you try for 1 year if you're under 35 and 6 months if your over 35 before getting concerned. That seems to be about the general standard..

  • Sorry I meant to say that we've been trying since Jan '08 and I just wasn't sure if it was too soon for the RE.

  • The stats say that 85% of couples will get pregnant within a year on their own, so after that year it would be appropriate to see an RE.  If there are other issues like irregular menstrual cycles or if you are over 35 then it may be reasonable to go in earlier.  I actually met with an RE at the beginning of April due to my whacked out cycles and was supposed to start treatment with Clomid when next cycle came.  I got my BFP about a week and a half later.

  • I think it depends on your age.  How many cycles has it been?

I went to my gyn for my annual and mentioned that we'd been trying for 5 months and I had some pain.  She did a few tests but said no RE until 12 months of TTC.

Your regular ob/gyn can do some blood tests just to be sure you are ovulating.  I'm 31 and those put my mind at ease a little.  I think REs are more like "full speed ahead" with alternative measure for conceiving.

  • Thanks MrsBro. I know he made us wait a year before he would do any testing, I thought maybe it would be longer before sending us to the RE.

This. ?I will be on the horn w/my Dr at 11 cycles...just incase there's a wait, or I have to see him, then another Dr. ?I don't want "having to see a Dr at the year mark", to turn into the 2 year mark b/c of waiting for an apt. ?

  • I'm 33, and b/c we had 6 months of good timing, my OB wanted to send me straight to the RE.  I was hesitant, and asked for b/w first.  My results came back uber-sucky, so now we have an RE appt next week.  Sad
  • I'm 28 (29 in July) and its been about 15 cycles of trying. All this time I just kept assuming I wasn't Oing and that was the problem, last night he was showing me bloodwork that confirmed O on a cycle that my chart didn't. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed that I won't even need the RE.

  • DH have been trying since Sept 08 and I am trying to avoid going to an RE right now.  I would like to avoid it even after the year mark since our insurance covers 0%!  I met with my doctor and told him about my concerns regarding DH's count and my cycle.  We started running tests on both of us with him.  I would rather exhaust his services before I pay out of pocket for an RE.

That being said, I guess I would be curious to know why he thought you would be a good candidate for an IUI.  My doctor really only suggests that if the DH's count is low - and I don't remember your whole situation.

ETA: Or you have an age or other issue where time is of importance.

I hope you don't need the RE, either.  But if there's a problem, they'll find it, and hopefully it'll be an easy-ish fix.  GL.

  • Thanks girls. While my is a really good gyn there are still a few things he's a lil stuck in the stone age about, for instance he keeps telling me that fo a 34 day cycle I should O on cd17, even when I was showing him my charts with an 11 day LP.

That would drive me crazy. ?

Also, I've heard that the REs are balls to the wall...like don't even look at your charts. ?I hope that my OBGYN would find anything first, and it's an easy fix, If I get to that point. ?So, I can imagine. ?I hope things work out sooner than later.?

DH's morphology is a little low and the motility is only 40%, and my cycles aren't always regular. He thinks that even with us trying so hard we may just be missing it timing-wise.

  • I'm in year 3 of ttc.  I went to a RE about a year and a half ago and had a bad experience so I never went back.  As silly as it mad sound - he scared me away from going to any RE.  I found a new one and had my first appt yesterday.

IUI is now just used for low sperm count though.  H's sperm count is great and we're doing IUI next cycle.

Mine looked at my charts. He did not put all stock in them, but used them as a small reference for what was going on. He also started us with some clomid and IUI (we could have done TI, but our IUI was covered under insurance)

They are not all uber intense. Mine listened, and really got a feel for what we wanted/needed. We were covered for IVF, but he did not jump straight to that. He told us we should have success within 4-6 months, but if not, we could try more IUIs, or talk about the next step. It was a lot of up to us.

That's SO good to hear. ?My OBGYN treats infertility, and I've never had a better doctor...So, hopefully the buck will stop there (if I get to that point). ?But, in the case that it doesn't, it's good to know there's some more holistic REs out there.?

  • Thanks.  I've heard a lot of great things about the RE that he referred me to, so hopefully I won't have a problem.

  • due to my family history of TTTC and our higher ages my doctor said 6 cycles. My annual is right around 6 so I'll talk to her then
  • I am 21 and waited 6 months. I had been charting and had only ovulated once. The dr had no problem I had come in early because I clearly was having problems

  • I'm on cycle 20 and haven't seen an RE yet. My OB gave me the referral a while ago, but it's by choice that I haven't gone yet.  DH and I would like to keep trying on our own for now.

Wow, GL with IUI!  I hope you get your BFP next cycle.  Smile
