Toddlers: 24 Months+

Figured out why DD is waking up so early.

I suspected this but I am pretty sure now.  It's because she's got to potty.

She was waking at 4:45 everyday (or earlier) crying and DRY so I'd take her to the potty.  BUT then she was up for the day.

DH and I decided that's too early so we wanted to see if she could put herself back to sleep.  She would go back down after fussing but she'd be wet at 5:30 when she'd be up for the day.

So for some reason (maybe she drank less or peed more before bed) she slept til 5:45 today without waking and was dry.

So what do I do to encourage her to sleep in and be dry?  Do you limit liquids?

Re: Figured out why DD is waking up so early.

  • We limit liquids.  DD has 2 full cups of milk in the am; one at 7 after waking up and one at 10.  Then we do a half of a cup 2 more times during the day which is milk with a little water (she hates juice and doesn't drink as much water as I'd like so I try to sneak her a little a couple times a day).  Then with supper we give her one half cup of just milk, that's at 5:30.  She sits on the potty just before bed at 7:30 and stays dry most nights (she's not totally potty trained yet; we've just started making real progress, LOL).

She also went through a phase where she was waking up whining, calling out for me, and sometimes crying, and we thought she was just having bad dreams.  It dawned on me one day that maybe she was waking up with the need to pee, which I still think it was even though she has stopped waking.  Now she just stays dry, or near dry.

    HTH!  GL!

  • Yes...that does help.  We limited liquids tonight, but I did not know when to "cut her off" :)

DD does tell me when she has to go but not with words.  She makes a silly sound which I am SURE is not loud enough to wake me up, so I'll never know.
