DS has 6-7 splinters in his foot -- help

Any tricks for getting out splinters? DS has a ton of them in one foot. I guess he was running around with no shoes on at his DCP and she has a wooden deck. DH picked him up today, so I need to talk to her tomorrow to see what happened. I can't imagine she would be so dumb to let a toddler do this -- she has 3 kids of her own, so she must know her deck is full of splinters by now.

Anyway -- any tricks for getting them out? I tried to hold him down while DH took them out with tweezers but he thrashed around so much and howled that we stopped because he was getting hysterical. I soaked his foot in the bathtub for a while and then gave him some Motrin so hopefully he'll sleep. He keeps telling me he has "boo-boos" on his foot. :-(

  • Try applying a warm cloth on the foot but dont wet it to get the skin to relax and not be as tight. Or try and get them out when he is alseep. Poor thing, I hope he feels better.

  • We have used the Neosporin with the pain reliever in it and then put a bandaid on it. It was only one splinter, but it came out enough over night so that I could pull it out easily. So sorry he has so many- poor guy! :(

  • Yuck.  Benjamin got about 5 in his hand last year and we were worried they were metal, so we ended up going to urgent care; the $10/copay was worth having someone else take them out.

I'd forgotten about that experience until now.  We tried tweezers, soaking, etc. first.  YUCK.

Uh oh -- I never considered that they might be metal. Why did you think his were? The splinters are brown, and I know she has a deck, so I just assumed they were from that.

  • We were worried that it was a chain link fence that we were getting rid of from our backyard.  It also could have been wood from wood chips, but we weren't sure.

I would say it's one of my biggest mom freak out moments.  Probably #1, until our sunscreen in the eye incident today.

I've had great luck using Baby Orajel to numb the skin. My son didn't even flinch when I pulled them out.

You're welcome. I googled when it happened to me -- huge lifesaver!

This is the trick!  DS had them a few times last year.  It was a mess until I heard about the Orajel trick.  he still is not a fan of having them removed, but it was much easier this way!  I also sterilize a pin and use that to lift up from under the splinter and pull it out with tweezers.

Then we put Neosporin with pain relief on it.  Sometimes you just can't get them adn have to let them work themselves out.  My pedi told us last year that if they have not come out themselves in a few days to call them so they can make sure they are not infected.

    Good luck!
