Hormone control??

Ever since I had my kids my hormones have been out of whack. I'm not on the pill or anything, so I'm not currently taking anything that would alter them. I hate that one day I'm in a terrific mood and then the next day I'm in tears and then a few days later I get upset by every little thing.

Does anyone know if there are medications for this? Would the pill help? I haven't been on the pill in 8 years but from what I remember, I still got pms when I was on it. If there is something that can help then I would be willing to make an appt w/ my dr, but with 3 kids and a busy schedule I don't have the time to make an appt just to be told that there's nothing they can do. Didn't know if anyone has taken anything to balance themselves out.

Most of the time I'm fine (I'm generally a very mellow, happy-go-lucky person), but I just don't like the emotional rollercoaster that makes a surprise visit each month.

Re: Hormone control??

  • The pill might help.  There are so many new ones.  Do you know what type you were on before?  A monophasic one delivers the same amount of hormone each day, which could help even things out.  I think it would be worth making an appointment with your doctor.

  • Hi there!

I, too had been off birth control since 2005 (we were just using condoms after Emily was born because I always hated the pill!) and felt EXACTLY as you described here lately: vastly different emotions from day-to-day for just a few days every month and I honestly just thought it was PMS!

At my annual Ob/Gyn pap smear & exam, I talked to my doctor and she said it sounds like I am actually suffering from PMDD - Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder and put me on Sarafem two months ago.  My doctor suggested I take a quick moment every day to write down what I am feeling on those days when I feel all out-of-whack and that really helped to narrow it all down for me and it was then that she said I had PMDD.  For me, it occurs around the 10th-15th days of my cycle, right before & during ovulation, which is common but some women have it throughout the month so, maybe jotting down your feelings would help establish your own pattern?

Talk about a HUGE difference these past two months!!!

At the same time, I got on Yasmin birth control pills.  My skin is so clear and smooth, my PMS cramps are significantly LESS painful and my actual period is shorter.  Just FYI since you might be wanting to get on the pill again.  :)

So sorry I wrote a novel, I just thought you could use a true experience to help you.  Please PM if you want to chat a bit more offline!

  • Thank you for your reply! I think I will make an appt w/ my doctor. It's actually been quite awhile since I've been in anyway and I guess this could be the push I need to get in there. :)
  • You may want to have your hormones tested.  You can actually order a saliva kit online (just google it), and you can use hormone cream to help balance your system.  Just another option you may want to look into.  Good luck!!
