Infertility

if you have/had fibroids...

Did you get them removed? Did your doctor think it was effecting your fertility? If they were removed, what type of procedure was used?

Thanks!

Re: if you have/had fibroids...

  • I had one large (baseball-sized) intratmural fibroid...

Did you get them removed? Yes

Did your doctor think it was effecting your fertility? No.  My OB/GYN and RE#1 both thought it was a non-issue and said tons of people have fibroids and no IF issues.  RE#2 (we switched after our 3rd early loss) said that he agreed with everything in our initial work-up regarding the fibroid and wouldn't have done anything differently had we seen him first.  That being said, after reviewing our early loss history, he said that he would recommend exploring the fibroid removal option because there was nothing else to try -- all of our RPL testing had been normal.

If they were removed, what type of procedure was used?  I had an endoscopic (laparoscopic) myomectomy to remove my fibroid.  This procedure is not performed everywhere, and had we stayed with RE#1, I would have had to have an abdominal myomectomy (which is what most people have).  Because we already had the fibroid issue in mind when we starting looking for a new doctor, we chose someone whose treats infertility but whose specialty is minimally invasive gynecological surgery.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.  Good luck!

  • I had a fibroid removed in December and I have another one that they left alone.  The one that was removed, but dr. said the location was not good and could have been blocking the sperm from my egg AND/OR in a spot of implantation.  The one that they left, they see no issues with.

I had a hysteroscopy, outpatient surgery (took less than an hour) for the removal (they removed polyps too).

We tried 3 cycles with no meds and had no luck.  So we are now on our 2nd cycle of Clomid.

Don't know that the fibroid was the only issue.....but certainly wasn't helping the situation.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

  • I saw your message below as well, congratulations for finding out about your fibroids. I certainly felt much better knowing I had them.

I had three - one the size of a lime squishing my left ovary, one the size of a tennis ball, and the third the size of a baseball lodged at the base of my spine. I had an abdominal myomectomy (invasive surgery) in April 2008. I'm happy to report that after taking a year break (mine and DH's decision, we could have started trying four months later) I am fibroid free, none grew back, and they got all my endo as well during the surgery. I do have some scar tissue on my left ovary that may be partially blocking my tube, but my RE is going to go ahead with IUI #3 this cycle even if the follicle on the left is the only matured one, he's not too concerned about the partial blockage.

I don't know if they were prohibiting me from getting pg, considering I'm not pg yet (I have other issues like high FSH). But I know that if I did get pg I would have have carried to term because they were taking up too much space in my uterus. I just started going back to my RE in March - I had an IUI last cycle but it didn't work (chemical pregnancy), and I'm on CD13 today, hoping to O by the end of the week so we can do IUI #3, hopefully with better success

  • Hey, I just saw your post below and wanted to add a couple of things....

My doctors all told me that the reason my fibroid was a non-issue was because it was not inside my uterus and therefore not causing any type of obstruction in the uterine cavity.  They even checked to make sure it wasn't warping the shape of my uterus from inside the wall -- which is wasn't.  It would make sense to me that if yours are located in your uterus and potentially affecting implantation, your doctor would recommend removing it.

Also, if yours are inside the cavity, they will probably be able to remove it during a hysteroscopy, as opposed to a more invasive abdominal procedure.

  • Thank you all SO MUCH for the info!

I have not talked to the doctor yet, but the nurse practioner doing the u/s could see it warping the shape of my uterine cavity, and she *thinks* the doctor will want to remove that one. She said the other one doesn't look like it would be a problem and they would probably just leave it. Of course, the doctor could tell me something completely different...
