Trying to Get Pregnant

Anybody got tricks to make her sleep!

I'm watching my BFF's 3 month old daughter overnight all week and she so nicely let me get about 2 hours sleep last night. Apparently she thought she was being murdered with an ax and had to let the world know. BFF said this morning that she has never cried that long and I personally think she just freaked out because mommy wasn't there to console her.

DH and I tried EVERYTHING but in the end she cried herself to sleep (only to wake up an hour later). DH had alcohol on the counter ready to liquer her up but he eventually got her to sleep on the couch with him (thankfully since I have to work today and he doesn't) and then she woke up overly happy this morning like she didn't just put me through hell.

So anybody got any tricks, old wives tales, etc etc. We tried feeding, burping, diaper changing, walking, pacifiers, massaging and soothing voices but got nothing. This is going to be the longest week of my life if it continues tonight, look forward to open circles on my chart!!!!!

  • Ugh, sorry!  I have no advice for you, but just wanted to say that I think it's great what you are doing for your BFF.  GL tonight.

  • White noise (like maybe a fan in the room), or monotone humming.  I can't sing at all, and when I used to babysit my godson all the time I used to soothe him pretty easily with flat tone, 2-syllable humming noise.  GL!
  • Try taking her for a drive. that may work
  • DH has this water fountain thing that's been sitting in the corner, I'll hook that up and turn the celing fan on tonight. Otherwise I'll go through a tank of gas in one night because she does sleep great in the car!

I know my BFF appreciates me doing this and like to think Im a great friend for it. I honestly didn't think she would react the way she did last night and it got me completely flustered because I was so tired. If only DH had two arms to help with, he was great with her!

    Thanks for the advice ladies!

  • I was also going to suggest a ride. In the end though, I best she's just missing mama.

A loud "ssshhhhh" sound (like when you are making someone be quiet) is supposed to sound like what it is like in the womb.  It's gotta be kind of loud though.  It works well with my niece. GL!

  • If she normally sleeps through the night then she is probably missing her mommy.  When DD was that age she would only sleep for extended lengths without crying if she was in her swing.  Constant movement put her at ease.  Do you have a cradle swing or anything similar?

You could always try the vibrator trick from Sex and the City.

Good luck!  I hope you find your groove!

  • Ugh! My niece gets like that. She cried for 2 1/2 hours straight. We tried burping her, feeding her, rocking her, nothing worked. She ended up having gas! Then she took the bottle and passed out.
  • I would suggest that you try swaddling, rocking, and possibly giving her a warm bottle.  White noise can be your best friend. HTH
  • I was just thinking about you wondering when your babysitting gig started.  (I follow your blog) Apparently it did!  I hope you find a routine, and tonight is better!  GL!
  • I'm sure you already did this, but did you ask BFF if anything goes on at her house at night that she might be missing?  My niece only sleeps if classical piano is playing, for instance, and and my sister didn't think to tell us that little tidbit the first time we babysat her.

She didn't realize it because she was playing the music hoping to stimulate her baby brain, and not to put her to sleep.  Sometimes mamas don't realize that an event can have more than one affect.

  • I second the white noise. Just put a fan in her room or a put in a radio and put it on static. It works like a charm with my nephew. Also, does it seem like she is gassy at all...sometimes a little mylicon helps if her tummy seems to be bothering her.
