Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Help - DD is So Ridiculously Congested

DD is so stuffy and booger-y....i feel so bad. She can only sleep 3 hrs at a time or so....which means this pst weekend *I* have only slept 3 hrs at a time.

I tried the bulb syringe, but she screams as if Satan himself if sucking the boogers out. We gave a humidifier, too, but no luck.

Any ideas? I was thinking of getting a Vicks vaporizer thats like a humidifier except it uses vicks strips and releases it into the air. Or a battery operating nasal aspirator that distracts dd with music (guess who's been on Babies r Us all morning??)

Help! Any ideas? DD and mommy need SLEEP!!!!?

Re: Help - DD is So Ridiculously Congested

  • Put a blanket under her mattress so that she is sleeping on an incline.  When my DD is congested I do this, run the humidifier and vicks vaporizer.  I also use the nasal spray for children.  GL!

  • We use https://www.littleremedies.com/saline-spray.htm (I think this is what it is) and it's great!  It sprays a tiny little mist into their nose and then we use the bulb suringe to get everything out.  She cried and cried and throws her head back and forth but after about the third time we used it, she realized it made her feel better, not worse.  She was so bad with it, my DH had to hold her head while I did it.  As soon as I was finished and she was screaming I would take her and bounce and say "see much better...i know it's awful being sick" in a happy voice...seriously, it worked! Once she got use to it, We would do it in the bath and that was the best time to do it!

  • DD has also been super congested on and off for the last 6 weeks.  We got  infant saline drops that we use before we suction her (warning: if she hates the bulb syringe, she will want to murder you for this - but it works.  DD looks at me like I'm the devil when I do it, but at least she can breathe).  Her pedi gave us a prescription for Zyrtec at her appointment on Thursday...he said it is approved for babies 6 months and up.  I didn't want to have to give her meds, but we can't seem to get rid of this and no one is getting any sleep, so I think I'm going to get it filled tonight.
