Anemia

I had my 26 week testing done the other day and DH pulled my labs off the computer (he's in the military and had access, but is a dentist, not an OB!)  According to the labs and the WHO website I found, I have mild anemia.  It kind of makes sense because we've been noticing I bruise easier and my arms keep falling asleep.  Plus, I am EXHAUSTED!

I called the clinic because the military seems totally laid back about everything and hadn't called me.  They said they wait for the values to get lower before they worry.  But I do have anemia.

We don't eat many fresh veggies- mostly frozen since DH and I are both in residencies right now (I do get strawberries, pineapple, oranges, etc.)  I've been drinking a lot more milk since getting pg, but now I read that it inhibits iron absorption.

Should I be worried?  Should I follow up and call again?  I compared my labs with pre-pg labs, and I definitely have a decrease in several values.

Re: Anemia

  • When you're anemic, it means you're low on iron.  So you need to really eat a lot more foods high in iron... meats, milk, grean leafy veggies (spinach is a good one).  It doesn't have so much to do with eating fresh vs. frozen veggies, since most vegetables aren't that high in iron to start with.  If you find it hard to eat enough just through your diet, try taking an iron supplement/daily vitamin.

     Good luck!
