Travelling with Homemade Baby Food

Hi.  I thought I might have better luck on this board then 0-6.  We live in the UK and are flying home to the US in June.  We have flown with DD before but at the time she was BFed.  There will be approximately 30 hours from the time we leave our house in England until we arrive at in-law's house in Atlanta.

If you make your own baby food do you have any suggestions as to the best way to travel with it?  I am guessing a small lunch box type thing with ice packs but thought someone might have a better suggestion.  And if I take it on the plane frozen there won't be any way to warm it up - I found out on a our last flight that they don't have microwaves.

TIA!

  • I use the cooler that came with my breast pump and the similac/enfamil ones that I got from the hosp. I would call the airline though & find out what their policy is regarding baby food jars. See exactly how much you can bring on, etc.?

You can warm up your food by not filling it all the way to the top of the jar/bowl & adding hot water used for tea. ?

  • I used our bottle bag with an ice pack, however the flights we took were all less than 6 hours.  We asked the flight attendant for a cup with hot water to warm it.  They were all very helpful.

One thing we did to be safe was take some store bought jar food, just in case.  And we did end up using it as a back up.

  • I'd thaw it in advance and then put it in a small lunchbox or bottle bag with an ice pack.
  • Thanks!  Of course, the hot water in a cup would work great on the plane - I don't know why I didn't think of that.

  • I just traveled this weekend with a bunch of jarred baby food for DS. ?Be aware that you might be searched. ?Thawed baby food or jarred baby food looks just like a liquid on the machines the screeners use. ?None of our food was taken away, but the bag the baby food was in was searched and they did inspect the baby food. ?In the future I will be pulling out all jars of food and placing them in a?separate?bin to speed the screening process.
