So, we got our swing off our registry for our shower and returned it b/c we didn't think we had space and didn't get any of the practical things we really needed... now I'm starting to have panic attacks that we do need the swing, but hoping we could just get a bouncer (cheaper).
Which do you have/prefer? And if so, which brand/style?
Thanks!

You don't NEED either, they just come in handy at times. It also depends on the baby...some babies hate swings. Of what I've gathered, it seems babies tend to like bouncers more.
We just got the Fisher Price Woodland travel swing ($50) and got the matching bouncer ($25)...both at Target.
Everyone has been telling me to get both.
So far we just have the bouncer, ours is the Fisher Price Woodland Creatures from Target and the swing I have my eye on is also by FP and is the starlight papasan cradle swing.
The swing was my best friend with DD. When it broke, I cried and then bought another one that night. It depends on the kid though. Some kids don't get into the swing. If you don't have room for a full sized one, you can get a travel swing.
The bouncer is good to have to put the baby in and move around the house. I used to put DD in it when I had to go to the bathroom. Fun times.

We got both; I wanted to just get the bouncer because I didn't see the point in having both, but my ILs insisted that we absolutely NEEDED the swing because their kids loved theirs...and DH believes that everything they say is gospel, so we had to get it. (I'm not bitter at my ILs at all, can you tell?)
IMO you only need one, and if I was choosing between them I would get the bouncer, because it's a lot more portable and you can set it on the kitchen table while you're eating, and use it as a feeding chair later if you don't feel like lugging out the high chair.
bouncy seat is a must- somewhere to put your DC down when you have to pee, etc.
my son hated the swing- complete waste of money for us.... this time we're using a travel one we got at a yard sale and seeing if the twins like it before getting a "good" one (we sold our orig expensive one)
Love this - THANK YOU!
I have registered for this:

It is a swing, but you can take out the seat, put up the kickstand, and use it as a bouncer (it doesn't vibrate, though....)
Then, when they are older, you can use it as a rocking chair!
It's all so confusing....
I also love your thinking... Need to look at TJ Maxx too!

We got both. I bought the papasan FP swing from a friend for 60 and got the bouncer from my sister at my shower. From working in childcare and being a nanny I would say a bouncy was used ALL the time. We couldn't have swings in daycare, but as a nanny, these were used quite often as well. I just look at it as one more thing to keep my hands free with a fussy baby. Mamas gotta get some time to herself too!
You could also consider getting a 2 in 1 bouncer/swing. I have seen them online at BRU and other places. Here is a link to one:

Or this: https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Zen-Collection-Cradle-Swing/dp/B0011MQLNQ/ref=combo_pack_i_1
I think both are an absoslute necessity. You never know what your baby will like. I would get a cradle swing that can swing side to side and front to back. My first daughter only liked side to side, so my "normal' swing was a total waste of money.
I'd try craigslist for good deals, if you have a tight budget. I bought our cradle swing and bouncer (fisher price aquarium) off of craigslist. Look for something almost brand new though.
We have both, but from what I've heard it really depends on your child. Some love one or the other and hate one or the other.?
I would sweat it too much either way, he/she can't miss what they never had.
Something to consider also is the car seat swing (we got this also). If you have an infant car seat, graco makes a frame that you can set your car seat in and it swings. It folds up small to fit in a closet (to solve space issues) and was only like 40-50 bucks (so not as pricey as most swings). ??
