what's your baby room "theme"

I'm not a huge fan of the stuff I see in stores and I'm sorry if I offend anyone but all the kiddie colorful stuff is just NMS.  I am hoping to find a balance between baby and modern decor to get the room some sophistication.  We are planning on moving in a year or so b/c we only have a two bedroom condo and are outgrowing it fast!  In either case, what have you decided on for your theme?  We are hoping that even when people see the room as a "baby" space, they also recognize that it's something they can transform.

I really love sea turtles, but don't want them thrown up all over the room...how are you creating a balance if you are going with a theme?

I feel like this is a question for Red. :)

Re: what's your baby room "theme"

  • I don't have a theme, really.  I chose colors I love together.

Red might be able to tell you what my "theme" is - to me, it's just purrdy.  lol

  • I am going to be doing Max's room in a sports theme, but not the normal theme you think of when you see the sports baby items in the stores. I am doing a light navy and dark red color scheme, with black and white photos of old pittsburgh sports photos framed on the walls, football and hockey puck shaped pillows that I am making myself, etc..
  • I am exactly like you in this respect.  We're doing a very plain and simple room that lends itself a bit towards nature (having a tree painted in white on our cream/tan walls) and finding some nature/bird artwork that isn't nursery artwork, just art in general.  Our "colors" are chocolate brown, creams, w/ a little powder blue thrown in.

Have you seen the sea turtle bedding at Gap? It's a bit theme-ish, but you could do only that and just use very simple/modern colors and patterns to fill it out.

  • We are doing a "Neverland" kinda theme, which the colors being sage and navy.  If it's a girl, we'll use more Tinkerbell and Wendy stuff, if it's a boy, we'll use more Peter Pan and Pirate stuff  :)
  • I also do not want a "Theme" nursery. I am going with the Trend Lab Safari bedding, it is chocolate, white and beige. I plan on painting the bottom half of the wall a warm beige and the top half white. I am also going to paint some abstract painting for the walls.

  • Rather than having "themed" bedding I chose a bedding with solid colors and no appliques.  Then I will be adding my theme in (nautical/beach) with just a few accessories.  Still definitely a work in progress, but here's what I have so far:

I'm actually looking for more sea turtle wall hangings vs. bedding (i plan on just using plain sheets for the crib)...it's more the accents and choosing the right hangings I think. My DH is even considering carving a turtle to hang and my FIL hand chalked a sea turtle for me for my bday last year that is black/white charcoal in a frame that I already have and love...I think I'm just concerned of OVERDOING the turtle thing, y'know? :)

I realize I am ovethinking this :). hehehe.

  • If you are handy with a sewing machine, creating your own bedding or accessories is a great way to go. Unlike my siggy, less is more when it comes to themes. A couple of sea turtles and complimentary colors are enough.

LOVE your style/colors :) It looks great so far!

  • I don't have a theme, I just picked the colors (white, lime and blue) and I played around them.

i would never consider myself "handy with a sewing machine" and I agree less is more.  You should take your own advice and people would respect you more :).

  • If it's a girl we're just going to do sage & pink. If it's a boy I've always wanted to do a hot air balloon theme... we'll do solid colored bedding but we have two hand painted pictures of hot air balloons in France (one over the Eiffel tower & the other over some shops) that  I want to hang on the walls. We will probably also get a mobile in the primary colors w/ hot air balloons- if you call that a "theme."

Omg every single thing you say annoys me. Even if it's nice. Sad

I see :) I am no help then b/c I am the same way with my little birdies and nests...i"m trying not to overdo it!

  • my bedding is Jungle Tales by NoJo...with light blue eggshell/semi-gloss stripes on the walls. I have cream short curtains and the Jungle Tales valance. I will use the comforter as a wall hanging. Our main colors are blue, green and cream with some dark brown...i dont think its too babyish, but its not too modern either...

  • Thanks, JCM.  I think we have the some of the same taste.  I had the natural/preppy debate thing going on, too, and I sided with preppy for the baby's room.  I can't wait to see your natural colored nursery although a part of me wishes I could have seen the preppy blue/green theme, too.  Post pics as you make progress!

hehe,it's so hard b/c I think both ideas are so great!  We'll see how it turns out :) I have some pictures (we painted, set up furniture) on my blog, but haven't done much else ;) I'm excited to see the rest of yours as well!

  • I have been saying that it's a "We love our baby" theme cause I also did not want a real theme.  I just found that I didn't like anything I saw available.  I do have a color scheme though and I do have nature going on.  I wanted to keep it grown up. maybe I would call it shabby modern.  I have some things in there like a wrought iron twin bed that are old but I have painted it bronze so it is moderny.  I am getting the breathable bumpers, sheets in light green (one of the colors) and I am making the dust ruffle.  I love to sew and I wanted one floor length and super full.  This is a fun thread.

  • I guess our theme is .:gasp:. classic pooh.  The only pooh things will be a mural over the crib, and maybe an accessory or two.

I think the key to having a theme is not getting everything to match. For example, we are not getting classic pooh bedding, rugs, curtains, etc. When everything is matchy-matchy it is too much.

This. I agree with.  I am afraid of crossing a line of "matchy matchy" ...I think since i'm avoding the curtains and bedding portion, it won't be too much.  I just hate the full bedding sets that they sell in stores.  I think they are overpriced and completely cheesy - JMO.  I also don't want "cute"...I know that sounds ridiculous since it's a baby...but cutesy is too much too.  I am glad you ladies are here to help me work through my thoughts.  I would like to start buying things to decorate soon, but I dn't want to waste my money on too much of one thing.
  • I would LOVE to do a tropical paradise theme for the room, but baby tropical is too gaudy for me.  I have a blanket I made years ago that I LOVE and we are using that for the color inspirations.  I really love teal, pink, and orange together.  We registered for a bedding set that has yellow sheets, a blue bumper and pink skirt - all polka dotted (the actual blanket has flowers, but who says we need to display it).  Unfortunately, it is temporarily out of stock right now so we may end up buying seperates :(

  • I'm doing elephants for my baby. they have a gorgeous elephant bouncer and swing at babydepot that im getting and pack and play. and my mom just picked up an adorable stuffed elephant for it. she was like "I BOUGHT THE BABY ITS FIRST STUFFED ELEPHANT!!!!" lol. so excited.
  • I just found out that we are having a girl on Friday, and my MIL is already asking what our theme will be...  I have no clue, but also don't want to overdue it.  I'm also going to be moving back to my parents house a month after the baby is born, so I'm not really excited about baby room decor just yet.

Build a room that you will like and enjoy (forget the kid) and then add in the turtle accents. You know you are doing it right when someone can walk into the room and NOT know that there are turtles everywhere.

I think turtles are a bad omen for good pooping.?

  • We were looking for someone "modern" like too, but still basic. We went with a blue and green argile print. I thought it would look cute with sea turle accents like you were talking about. =)

  • I'm not doing a theme either. I chose different shades of purple for the colors, with touches of white. I imagine some of the things people get me will have embellishments on them, but the major things like bedding, curtains, etc. will just be plain colors. I didn't want something that screams "baby's room."

  • I feel you we're moving in to help my mom wile my dad's deployed so the baby's room is going to be a guest bedroom/ guest grandchild's room when we move out. So we're doing one wall with orange-ish thick stripes on it but we're keeping everything toned down. Maybe a few flower pictures on the walls if its a girl or animals if its a boy. I think I'm going to make my own bedding with either solids or a mix or prints and solids.

But I hate pretty much everthing I see in the stores  bleh

  • If it's a girl I am doing an Andy Warhol Butterfly and Flowers theme & if it's a boy I'm doing a Sailor Jerry style nautical theme. Excited.
  • Pink, different shades. We have several handmade blankets that we'll switch out. Antique Ivory walls, white molding and white furniture. I don't really have a "theme"
  • It's not really a theme but we are heading toward the vintage look.

These are the colors we're using too!  I'm throwing yellow in their too; our comforter for the crib is squares of light green, pink, pale yellow, & white.  I'm going to put a few stars and moons on the wall-other than that, just the colors for a "theme."

  • Lots of solid colors with a splach of stars.
  • i got the train bumper at land of nod and i want to go with a train-ish themed room, but also lots of bright colors (there are tons of great colors in it).
  • DH and I raise sheep and cattle, so we're using some farm animals (we have a couple very large stuffed ones) and a bunch of lambie stuff. We're not painting or anything, and we'll probably use solid colors (greens and blues) for bedding. Still don't know the sex, might not til he or she arrives!

  • DH grew up really into boats, so that is basically going to be our "theme". Although its rather expensive, I absolutely love the baby boats nursery from Pottery Barn Kids. I'm hoping to do some handmade projects involving boats, to make it more personal and unique for the baby.

  • We are not really having a theme.  I did not like any of the baby stuff either.  We are doing his room in a light blue, tan, and chocolate brown. The bedding has strips and I am having a few items made for the wall to tie in the color scheme because I wanted the walls to stay a neutral color so we could his room as he grows.  If you find a pattern you like you can always have the bedding stuff made.  That is what we considered for a while.
