We're in the same boat. Baby Bargains recommended Target for buying a Dutalier (sp) glider. That may be our compromise. I'd love to buy the cream of the crop glider but it's hard to justify the money. Sorry, I'm no help.
Well, if you had to buy a second one to replace the first you'd spend $10 more than the more expensive one... Plus, bigger price tag doesn't always equal better quality. Maybe check out a site that compares brands? (Having a pregnancy brain moment and can't think of the official name....)
SIL went really expensive. Something like $900 on theirs. But they are leaving it in the living room. I know the walmart glider does not recline so that in itself might be worth the extra money.
My best friend just had a baby in Feb...she said to spend the money on a glider you love, as it is where she spends most of her time soothing the babe. Take that for what you will.
If it looks like a piece of crap when I get it I'll just return it. Honestly though, I can't see spending a lot of money of something like a wooden glider. I kinda think they are ugly, plus what will you do with it once your children have outgrown the need for them?
If I had big bucks to spend I'd get a really nice looking la-z-boy, but alas it will be the cheap Walmart glider for us.

That glider looks really nice for that price. Nice goin'.
I think gliders is one of those items where everyone needs to decide for themselves if it's worth the splurge or not.
We followed advice of several friends that have had kids recently and spent the $$ on the expensive glider. If we're going to spend long hours in this chair for the next couple of years then I want to be comfortable. And I appreciate the higher quality components and the guarantees (lifetime on glider components for the dutailier and 2 year for the others). In fact, we just ordered ours yesterday. After spending a lot of time comparing the dutailier, best chair and little castle options (all glider/recliner options), we settled on the little castle. It just fit both me and DH better, which says a lot since there is 8 inches different in our heighth. It was expensive, but I'm so excited about it. And it's going to match the nursery perfectly.
?Walmart: Needs a slipcover, I'm pretty sure. This is good because they can be washed, bad because they constantly need adjusting and cost extra (unless you included that in your price).
BRU: Ready to use, but a bit pricier to start with. Probably can't be washed other than a basic wipe down.?
I'd go with whichever is most comfortable. We searched and searched and finally found a rocker that suited us ... at almost $900. But we got it, because we plan to use it a lot, and for a very long time. We were going to go with a BRU at $400, but I'm glad we didn't, because we would have ended up not using it much because it wasn't super comfy to us.?

Just a PSA here. If your order the one above order it EARLY. I used to work for Costco.com and I can't tell you how many times irrate pg ladies would call up b/c their Shermag glider arrived broken. Replacements would take weeks and weeks, and they'd be crying "...but I'm due in 5 days".
Maybe they've fixed the packaging problem by now, but to be on the safe side I'd order early. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good glider, they just get a lot of abuse by UPS and apparently packaging isn't always strong enough.
This probably goes for all baby furniture you are having shipped to your house, and not just from Costco.

thanks for the tip. is it a good glider? many returns other than the shipping problems?

I've never sat in it, but I'm guessing by the number they sold that it is a quality glider. I can't recall anyone calling in to return it b/c they just didn't like it.
The only issue was the shipping/broken parts thing, and it's not like it happened every time. When I worked there the gliders shipped from Canada (Quebec I think) and so you can imagine if the things don't have extra strong packaging they might have a broken spindle or two by the time they end up delivered in California (for example).
I'm buying a more expensive one (about $550 for glider and ottoman) in tan- after the baby grows up, the glider is moving into the den. I think it's worth it in this case. It's basically a long-term investment fo rus.

I think its all up to how long you are going to use it. I got a glider from Freecycle (so it cost me nothing!) but I have seen some nice used ones for sale on Craigslist too. Its great to keep things out of the landfill- and its "green" shopping.
I still haven't officially decided if I'm going to get one due to space issues, but if I do it will be a Walmart one, or a similar price. The only thing I will be using it for is breastfeeding so I don't care what it looks like, and I'm sure it is comfortable enough.
Re: cheap glider vs. more expensive glider...
Are there any ratings online that you could look at to compare?
I'm putting my grandfather's rocking chair in the nursery... it means a lot to me, and I think it will suffice.
I'm going with a cheap ($200) glider from Walmart. It glides, reclines and comes with a gliding ottoman...sold!
