Baby Names

warning-weird middle name that DH wants!

Okay, just posted the "Picking boy names can't be this hard" yesterday. Here's an update. I talked to DH and I told him if I can have Lucas he can pick the middle name.

He chooses Raistlen (pronounced Raist-Len). I loathe it. But we have to compromise I suppose. It's a character from Dungeons and Dragons, for those who have nerd gamer husbands like me. MN aren't use that much so I said, fine, he can have it. He still disagrees with Lucas. I told him to let him warm up to it. I'll keep you ladies posted *sighs*.

  • Really? I would never agree to a name I didn't like, especially one from Dungeons and Dragons. I realize middle names aren't used that often but Raistlen is not good. Sorry.

  • It seems like there is bound to be some better compromise out there for you two than a first name that he hates and a middle name that you hate. I think it may be time for you two to go back to the drawing board.

And that middle name is terrible!

  • I like Lucas. Raistlen is nms.  It sounds like both of you don't like 50% of the name (you don't like Raistlen, he doesn't like Lucas). It might be good to start over on a name list until you can find 2 names that you both like.

I'd tell him not to be too "out there" with his choices, though. I work with lots of kids, and I can tell you that kids don't like having extremely unique names or names that are references to their parents tastes in film, games, or politics. I know someone who named their kid an obviously Lord of the Rings first name, and I can't help but feel bad for him. He already gets picked on. Just because his parents are into LOTR doesn't mean he will like it. One of my friends said it best "You're naming a real person, not a fictional character!"

If he wants to reference Dungeons and Dragons, maybe he could pick a less obvious reference like Grey (Greyhawk), Lance (Dragonlance), Wilder (a character class, I think). I think Lucas Grey, Lucas Lance, or Lucas Wilder all sound pretty cool. I don't know much about that game, but I'm sure there are many ways he could incorporate it into a name that you like too.

Good luck and don't get too discouraged!

I agree with yu 200% on how horrible that mn is! we may have to start all over! ARGH!

This. You should find something you both can get behind.

  • Maybe this is a strategic move by your DH to make you reconsider the first name of Lucas?

  • He's messing with you - there is no way that he could possibly want you to name a kid, even a mn, after D&D...

Is Lucas worth it to you? Or is there another compromise name you can use? sorry, but dh's mn is pretty awful..

this. and i guess i'm in the minority but where i live and when i was growing up, middle names were used fairly often or people at least knew what everyone's middle name is.

  • Um... how old is your husband?   Because I'd give anyone the serious side-eye if they wanted to name a child after a game character.

And yes, Middle names DO matter... a lot.

What a dumb thing to do to a child.

You'd be surprised.  People have mentioned Everquest and WoW character names, too.  Grown women shouldn't marry 12 year old boys.  It's just not right.
  • I'm definitely more open to more unique names for middle names but Raistlen just sounds like wasteland.

  • I would think you two should definitely keep looking. There has to be something out there that you both like. It would just be sad if you both hated his name.

From D&D?  Really?  I'd tell your DH that you can compromise on a name that you aren't ashamed to look him in the eye and tell them the origins of it.

  • Agree with PP....it sucks to have a name that you both hate part of. ?Even if he's serious on the weird suggestion, you're getting a taste of your own medicine. ?Force a name he hates on him, and you get one in return. ?go back to the drawing board and leave BOTH Lucas and Raistlen off.

I went to high school with a guy named Wilder.  He's really smart and funny, a little hippie-ish but in a cool way.  Maybe Wilder Lucas is a better compromise than Lucas Raistlen?

  • Im not a fan... and the kid will probably hate it in high school... however it is good to compromise with hubby. DH and I have been arguing names for weeks (and his are awful as well)

I never knew where Raisteln came from. My geeky stepbrother used that as his email for years and I never knew it was d&d. Now I want to call him up and crack on him.

  • As soon as I read this post I called my DH who is a "nerdy gamer."  He thought it was the coolest name ever - and then proceeded to tell me the history of Raistlen.  Then he tried to convince me how it'd be so cool to name our kid Raistlen - or Raistlen's brother, Caramon. LOL

I totally understand what you're going through! LOL  Smile
