I can not swallow the Rx prenatal vitamins. I had the same problem last time I was pregnant, and basically failed at taking the vitamins. My last doc told me to take Flinstones which is what I am doing now. Can I take the 800 mcg folic acid supplement you can buy at Wal-Mart? I don't go to the doc until May 6th. TIA!

Re: Folic acid/vitamins question
I don't see why not, but how much folic acid is in the Flinstones? I've heard of pg women taking 2 of those per day though to get the right dosage for an adult.
2 Flintstone vitamins has 800 mg of folic acid. That's all you need--no need to take a supplement, unless your doc has suggested it.
While folic acid is water soluble, March of Dimes and others recommend that you don't take more than 1,000 mcg (1 mg) from synthetic sources. The level you have to take to reach toxicity is really high though - women with a history of neural tube defects take 4,000 mcg daily, so if you want to take a supplement, it probably won't hurt. Too much folic acid can mask a vit b12 deficiency though - however if you eat red meat regularly, it's probably not an issue.
I'd maybe recommend going with the 250 or 400 mcg supplements though (look around between drug stores, Target, WalMart, etc - you can find lower doses than 800 mcg), to be safe.
I personally take a prenatal (800 mcg of folic acid) and a folic acid supplement of 800 mcg. But I was trying to replenish folic acid stores after the treatment for ectopic pregnancy.
