Baby Names

Helena

I would naturally pronounce it Hel-een-uh. I don't like the other pronunciations. Do you like this name? How would you naturally pronounce it? I know she'll have to correct people so I might use it as a middle name, but I would prefer it for a first name.?

Re: Helena

  • I pronounce it just like Helen with an "ah" on the end.  But I could see pronouncing it Hel-lay-nah too.

I'm trying to think how Helena Bonham Carter and the capital of Montana are pronounced....

My fav name growing up, and even when DH and I started to TTC. But when I'd talk about it with people (I openly talk about our phantom baby name choices haha) they almost always pronounced it like the name Helen, with a AH at the end. I hate that!!! to me its Hel-Lay-Nah. Thats how I've always heard it and always loved it!

But..After hearing so many people pronouncing it Helen-ah I couldn't handle it! I didn't want heror us to have to correct people saying it all the time. And i just hate the name Helen. No offense to anyone who is a Helen. But it's just one of those names...

    Edit::

I also like the way you say it "Hel-een-uh" . If the name was mis pronounced like that all the time I'm sure we would go with it haha. Stupid Helen-AH

  • I went to school with a Hel- ay- na but I have a student that is a Hel-ee-na. I think I like Hel-ay-na better.

Helen-ah is my least favorite pronunciation. I think we'll use it as a middle name. I know it will drive me crazy to hear it being pronounced wrong all the time!?

    I don't see where the hel-ay-na comes from. I get Helen-ah and Hel-een-uh. ?

I love this name. I pronounce it Helen-ah.?
  • I'd pronounce it Hel-ee-nah or Hel-ay-nah.  I don't like Helen-ah at all so I wouldn't even think to say that.  Some people might, but a simple correction will set them straight.  I like Hel-ay-nah the best, with Hel-ee-nah in close second!
  • i automatically read it  hel- lay-nuh

  • Hel-ay-nuh. I like it said this way, but not the other ways.
  • I would totally think Hel-een-ah as you did.

I don't know why anyone would pronounce it Hel-ee-nuh (with a long e sound). That doesn't make sense to me.

Lena= lee-nuh. Makes sense to me. Lena doesn't sound like lay-nuh so that doesn't make sense to me. It was my thread a few weeks ago. I'll try to find it.?

  • LOVE! And, I too, usually think of the pronunciation as He-lay-nuh....this is on my virtual baby girl name list too, ha!
