Vacation to Cleveland

So me and my husband are thinking about going to Cleveland on vacation. He is a huge Indians fan.  We definitely would go to a game or two. We would definitely fly because of the distance.  I've been looking at hotels and want to stay downtown close to as much as possible, since we won't have a car.  My question is how safe is it downtown, would you feel comfortable walking from the Renaissance hotel to Jacobs field approx 1/2 mile.

Re: Vacation to Cleveland

  • As long as you stay on the main roads near the downtown building you are fine. I would not go to the outskirts. Honestly if you are feeling a little unsafe for a late night game just take a cab. You should have no problems during the day.

What else are you doing in Cleveland?

  • I'm not sure what else, I noticed there is the towercity shopping. I'm open for ideas if you have any suggestions.
  • DH and I stayed there 2 summers ago to go to a game. We only live an hour away but wanted to make a fun date night of it so we had an evening in the city.?

It's a pretty safe area- I wasn't nervous at all. We did cut through Tower City and went in the underground walkway there because we were stopping for some food before we went to the game, and then on the way back we wandered around the city and hit up a few places for drinks before we finally got back to the hotel.

  • Stayed at the Renaissance, that is- it's a comfy hotel but we booked at the last minute and our room was small and a bit cramped, even for the two of us. Make sure you book early enough so that you have your choice of rooms and get a big one!
  • Oooh, as for other stuff to do- the next day, we went to the Great Lakes Science Center since neither of us had been there- it was pretty neat! I always liked the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame but DH was never interested. I'd skip the zoo this time around because the elephant house is under construction and it's kind of a jumbled mess right now.

If it's nice, you can get on a tour boat at the docks (near the Rock Hall) and ride on the shore/down the river. Some of them have dinner tours, too.?

Plenty of museums around- the Natural History and Art Museums are cool, too.?
  • what about a spa?  is there one in the Renassiance or in the Towercity complex?
  • GREAT LAKES BREWERY!!!!

  • I would go to the Great Lakes Science Museum. I have actually never been to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but I heard its nice if you are into it. They have the Nautica Queen dinner on the lake if you want to go on Lake Erie.

Tower City isnt that great for shopping but okay to walk through to see the water fountains.

If you like Italian food Little Italy is nice.

    Have fun!

  • do you know of any good shopping that is close?
  • I like Crocker Park, but that's out in Westlake, I think. Or, you can drive east to Beachwood and they have Beachwood Place (mall) and Legacy Village (shopping area). Those are both a bit out of the way, though- but if you have some time to spare neither of them are bad places to go. If you're looking for a full day of shopping, I'd head east to Beachwood. Tower City isn't horrible- it's just not as great as it's hyped up to be.
