Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Sippy cups

Any 8+ month olds here still not use a sippy cup?  Liev holds his and brings it up to his mouth but he does not drink from it. I don't think he's figured out he needs to suck.  Granted, I don't give him a sippy every day but we have been offering it for about 4 months now.  He will, however, take sips from a regular cup if we hold it up for him and tip it.

Re: Sippy cups

  • Henry hasnt mastered it either and I have tried every cup! He likes to chew on the nipple. Recently he has started to drink a small amount from a Nuby cup, but I am not sure that he knows what he is doing!

  • My little guy hasn't figured it out either. ?He won't tip it up but he'll hold it. ?Then if I try to help him by tipping it for him he lets go and then turns his head. ?He'll drink out of a regular cup if I hold it for him but I think it's more of a "I want to clink my bottom 2 teeth on the cup and listen to the sound it makes" more than actual drinking. ?:)
  • We aren't really at the sippy cup yet, other than playing with it, but if its any consolation our Dr doesn't even recommend using sippy cups.  I'm going to try to get him to just to save our furniture and carpets and whatnot, but our dr does suggest bypassing the sippy and giving them sips from a regular cup.  So if it doesn't bother you, I wouldn't really worry about him mastering the sippy, although I'm sure he would figure it out eventually.

  • DS just puts the spout up to his mouth and chews on it.  I had a relative give me the suggestion of using the sippy cups that don't have the flow regulator valve on them, but that slowly drip.  That way they know something is going to come out of the spout.  He seems to be more interested in them since we switched.

  • DS was the same way with the PLaytex cups....we bought a Munchkin one when I realized the sippy cup thing was going nowhere...it has a flow regulator, but if you bite down on it (not just suck), the water also comes out so it works perfect for DS since he just gnaws on it anyway. ?I still have to hold it steady for him, but this one is working out so much better than the other one...

  • DD wouldn't take it until we went to the Nuby ones with the soft top...it feels more like a bottle so she got the idea. Now she takes any sippy cup with no problem :)

  • Take the valve out.  DD drinks out of it just fine.

  • My DS will drink from a sippy if I hold it to his mouth, but he wont hold it. When i hand it to him he turns it upside down or chews on the spout or handle.

  • Dd loves her munchkin cup (sipper and straw both)!  She likes to chew on the spout and drinks pretty good from it.  She did not do well (and still does not) from the hard spout cups.  hth
