Gerber vs Carters

So, word on the EFF board is that Gerber's onesies run small and don't fit over cds very well.  We rec'd a TON (didn't register for) of Gerber onesies for our shower (a friend hosted & organized a onesie decorating actvity - some came out super cute) and I'm worried I won't really be able to use them.  Should I go buy some Carter onesies because they'll fit over the cds better?

Re: Gerber vs Carters

  • We only have a handful of Gerber clothes, but I HATE them all. I would definitely replace with Carter's. Carter's fit better for us, and are much softer.

  • Gerbers stuff is cheap and fits a size smaller than on the tag. I think carters is better quality material.

Ditto.  See if you can return them somewhere? If not perhaps a local consignment shop would give you some cash for them?  We had some gerber stuff, and I routinely passed it over for any of our other options.

ETA:  doh - didn't see the decorated part...  I'd keep the cute ones!!  Just make sure you pull them out to use well before the time period that they say they'll fit.

  • Ditto pp...

Carter's fit for much longer. Gerber runs small so just organize them accordingly -

Put the 6 month Gerber with the 3 month Carter's and you should be good to go :)?

if they're already decorated, there's not much you can do.  Like the PP said - just pull them out really early. DS was wearing some 18m onesies at 3m. (he was big and the onesies ran small)

You could try some carter's ones. It's tough to tell, though, because carters has so many different lines, and they're sized slightly differently.

FWIW, DS was in sleep-n-plays for almost all of his newborn stage. We hardly used any onesies until after 3-4 months.  So I don't think you need a ton, and by 3-4 months, you'll be able to tell if your baby is going to be on the bigger or smaller side and how well/poorly things will fit.

Exactly this.  Just make sure to pull them out early enough.  I got a couple packs of Gerber organic cotton onesies and really liked them, but didn't get to use them for long.  Any you buy for yourself choose another brand.  For summer you probably won't use them much anyway, but we used them a lot in the winter for warmth.

  • Actually, it's not even an EFF or CD thing. Gerber just runs INCREDIBLY small. Very narrow and very short.

DD was 8lb1oz at birth and generally 90+% for height and around 70-80% for weight for her first year. She outgrew the Gerber 0-3mo size at 6 weeks . And outgrew the 3-6mo Gerbers at 3mo. The Carters tend to fit until the age the tag says, even for a largish baby like my DD.

Take back any that you can.

  • We had good like with Gerber when she was really smaller, but later (6mo+) Carter's all fit better.  We usually used the Gerber onesies under outfits (she was little in the winter) instead of wearing them on their own.
  • They also sell garment extenders for onesies that might help you extend the life of the Gerber ones.  I didn't CD with DD until she was a toddler, and I found the Gerber onesies ran small.  I actually have the 0-3 month onesies leftover from her in with the newborn clothes.  We never used the garmet with DD, as I just adjusted the size as pp mentioned.  However, this go around baby #2 will be in some CDs, so I think I might pick up the extenders to see if they help the smaller onesies fit better over CDs.
