How did you wean dc?

So i am really trying to wean ds although it just breaks my heart...Crying. However my doctor seems to think it is necessary for the pregnancy. Anyway the way I've been going at it was to cut out one feeding each day, which was working great. And then I cut out the last feeding a couple of days ago anyways now I'm convinced that I'm getting mastitis on one side. So I nursed him again. Is there a better way to go about this? How do you avoid getting mastitis when weaning?

Re: How did you wean dc?

  • no advice, as i am still nursing lucy, but have you talked to a different doc or lac consultant? i just wonder b/c many docs are quick to say "quit nursing" but unless you are having a problem (where contractions of the uterus would be a problem & you are on pelvic rest), there really is no need to stop, from my understanding. kellymom.com has some good info, i did indeed also find that nursing helped to soothe my m/s. i have seen my supply drop some, but lucy doesn't seem to be minding at this point, just eating more solids at meals. i am also giving her cow's milk with cereal in the morning. ?

good luck, i'm sure it's not an easy decision. ?

  • Weaning is a long process and not fun. I just went thru it with DD. I dropped one feeding every 4-5 days and the last feedings I dragged out a bit longer. I did have to hand express in the warm shower sometimes so there wasn't pain. Good luck.
  • I think the reason is that I have a bicornuate uterus and with my last preg. I started getting contractions (more like braxton hicks) just after 20 weeks and went into labor at 32 weeks, where they stopped it and I did make it to 39 weeks. So I'm guessing that is why my dr. wants me to stop. but yeah, It is super sucky! I planned to nurse for a little while longer.

  • We are going through that now, although I'm not planning to fully wean right away.  We are just gradually cutting back on feedings.  I've been prone to plugged ducts and I've been getting them very frequently since reducing feedings.  The LC's recommended taking Lecithin because it is supposed to help with this.  I finally figured out that it comes in caplets so I don't have to suffer with mixing it in with my food (tastes nasty).  It might be something you could ask your dr about taking.  I get it at my natural food store.
