This is sort of a repost, but narrowed down. Not PG yet, but we're TTCing and a-la "Secret" style we're planning for the baby to help it come. Yeah, I'm lame, but so far the methods always worked for me (even before it was popular and just common sense). So we're creating an idea of the baby in our heads now.
We both love the name Callie/Cally/Cali, but our last name is Riley and Callie Riley just seems WAY too repetitive. We've gone back and forth on what it could be short for and narrowed it down to two:
Calla (as in the flower, middle name would probably be Joanne after my Grandmother)
California (mn would also be Joanne)
Now, we're hippie-ish. The other girl's name we have picked out is Summer (Eleanor would be the mn). We like it that way. So of those two, which would you hate me for less?
We've tossed out Calliann, Callia, Calliana, etc. We just don't like how they sounds.
Re: Which Would You Hate Me For Less?
Of your given choices, I'd pick Calla or Callianne or Calliana.
What about Calia or Callia? (Cuh-lee-ah) I met a little girl named Calia and her dad called her Callie.
Yeah, I totally agree. I wouldn't name my child California if someone paid me to. Summer is really cute!
We live in San Diego.
DH was born and raised in the Bay Area and has never lived anywhere else.
LOL fair enough. ?
I like both Calla and California
Yeah the name California is out there, but I've loved the name since Dani California came out. Alas, as native Oregonians, our family and friends would not be pleased with a name like that lol
I can see Calla.?
I, personally, would hate to have the name of a state that I lived in...?

I like Calla best for sure.
California is very pretty too though. I wish we could use cute names like that but our last name is "Starr" which makes most names sound knid of tacky.
Calla and Summer are very pretty. I could go with the suggestions of Calista or even Calliope.
California? No. Not only is the name not very pretty on its own, given the Red Hot Chili Peppers thing, which WILL come up frequently in her life, why would you want to set her up for the Californication thing in junior high/high school?
The full name we'll use for Summer is Summer Daze Eleanor. That way she can opt to drop the "Daze" if she ever wants or drop the Eleanor if she just wants Summer Daze.
Calla would probably be Calla Lily Joanne, for the same reason. She can drop it if she wants.
California we think would just be California Joanne since I don't see the point of making California more obscure. And, to the PPs who mentioned it- the point is to come up with a name that will be shortened to Cali.
So they are a bit more hippie-ish. But again, if my kids end up wanting to be normal (*shudder*) they have options.
That song Dani California is how we came up with the name. I didn't really think about Californication, but by the time she's in Jr. high the Red Hot Chili Peppers and that song will have mostly faded into oblivion.
Plus we plan (hopefully) to raise our kids out of the country down in the Caribbean somewhere. Not sure how popular RHCP are there and if it would even be an issue in the end.
Calla Riley doesn't sound good together. California is just not a good idea.
Summer Riley flows nicely.
JAYE!!! How are you?
I really like Summer Eleanor, and I think Calla is pretty, too.
California...not so much, sorry. Dunno if you know this, but California was actually named for a mythical paradise called Califia (it was in a 16th century Spanish novel) - maybe that's an alternative that isn't so overt? Otherwise, I like Calliope, which can also be shortened to Callie.
HEY! Where have you been!?!?!?! I've missed you, I thought you vanished off the boards after your wedding! How are you? It's almost been a year, can you believe it!?
I actually really like Califia. Thanks for the suggestion! I think we're sold on Calla, but just in case my brother nabs the name or something I think that's a good back-up!
Calliope is really cute and I really like it, but DH hates it. He said it's too Spanish/Mexican and since we live so close to Mexico and plan to live in a Spanish speaking country no one will ever pronounce it the English way, and neither of us really like the Spanish pronounciation.
But it's great to see you! You should swing by ND sometime. I'm rarely there, but they'd all be happy to see you!
California is aweful and Summer sounds like a stipper...I have had to talk a friend out of using it. I think Calla is very pretty.

I really like Calla, Callista, and Calliope.
Other suggestions, just to give you the Cali/Callie option:
Calandra
Calantha (gorgeous flower)
Calatea (flowering)
Calia (beauty)
Calida (warmth)
Caliopa
Calise (gorgeous)
Calypso
Not officially, though. I love the name when said out loud (Cali that is) but not when it's written down on paper with our last name. Too many "y" sounds in it. Plus DH's sister is Kelly Riley which is very close. If we give her something different the family on that side can call her that if it gets too confusing between Kelly and Callie.
