"Joel" and "Joelle". ?I love the name "Joelle" for our daughter but DH thinks it sounds exactly like "Joel" which makes him not like the name for a girl (He knows a man by the name of Joel pronounced Joelle and so that's who he pictures when I mention the name.) ?I guess in his defense, in our language (Patois) they are pronounced the same.
Re: Are these pronounced the same?
No.
Joel - is pronounced JOLE (one syllable) rhymes with pole.
Joelle - is pronounced JO-ELLE (two syllables) and the "elle" part is like Elle Woods from Legally Blonde.

This.
First of all- yay Jamaica!
Yes, in most languages they are pronounced the same.
Check out this site to hear them both in French: https://forvo.com/search/Joel/fr/
They will also be pronounced the same in Spanish and, of course, Patois.
But in English they are pronounced a little differently.
Joel is Jo-l
Joelle is Jo-Elle
And most languages pronounce both names in the feminine way (with the "elle" ending) instead of the masculine way. So even if you name your daughter Joelle you won't risk the name being pronounced the wrong way in whatever language it's spoken in. You'd only have to worry about that if you wanted to name your son Joel (Jo-l).
On that same link I gave you, click on the "English" tab and hear "Joel" in English to fully understand what we're all saying.
This is exactly what I was thinking.
Joel = rhymes with "dole".
Joelle = rhymes with Noelle.
