If/When your water breaks...

What is your plan?

Are you going to drop everything and rush to the hospital?

Personally, I live 3 blocks from the hospital, and I'm thinking I'll take a shower and make myself feel somewhat ladylike before going (this is if I'm not having excruciating contractions, of course). I figure I won't get another shower for a little while, and it would make me feel a whole lot more comfortable to be clean when I have so many people down in my business.

I don't think I'm crazy.... am I??

Re: If/When your water breaks...

  • Assuming my water breaks before I'm actually at the hospital in labor, my plan is the same as yours. So no, I don't think you're crazy at all!

  • O ya, I also plan on taking a minute to throw some of the groceries that I just bought in the freezer so they don't go to waste :)

  • I live really close also, so IF it happens I'll probably take my time getting cleaned up and making sure our house is in order, though IF it actually happens, I may be way excited and scrap this plan lol.
  • I had some serious contractions before my water broke, so I bee lined to the hospital which was about 15 -20 minutes away.  Lucky I did, b/c I delivered less than an hour later.

  • I live right next door to the hospital so I see myself waiting a while before I actually go to the hospital. I absolutely hate sitting in the hospital so I don't want to be there any sooner than necessary.
  • I totally plan to take a shower, do my hair try to relax / nap.  I'd like to be in the hospital for as little time as possible.
  • Hahaha... no, you're not!! I'm a little wierd about being clean as well... I'll shower 3 times a day if you don't watch me...

From what I understand, it's not like in the movies where your water breaks and then the baby practically falls out. You have some time, it kinda depends on the timing of your contractions, how you feel, etc... I'll call the hospital when mine breaks, but I have a feeling I'll shower and stuff before I go as well.

  • My sister's dr told her from the time it breaks, she has an hour to get to the hospital so she could shower within that time if she wanted. I'll double check with my dr of course, but I'm hoping it's the same advice because I will insist on showering before leaving!!
  • That was my plan until I found out I have to be induced. Even if my water didn't break, I was planning to shower and fix myself up if my contractions became regular enough. I think you'll feel much better if you do!
  • I'll go to the hospital when my water breaks because we live about 45 minutes away and I do NOT want to get stuck in I-5 traffic while I'm in crazy labor.
  • Same as you, and I plan to eat something as well. I know once I get there, the hospital is going to (stupidly) tell me I can't eat. I am not a happy girl without food.

  • I think a shower sounds like a great idea!  Hope it can work that way!
  • I'm literally 2 minutes from the hospital, so I'm with you, I'll be hanging out, assuming I go into labor at home. ::crosses fingers::

I want to hang out there as long as possible, time contractions and what-not, so that's the plan in theory.

  • IF it breaks, I would wait until things get going. I don't want to gte sent home if I am not far enough along - one trip to L&D sounds bad enough. When we thought we were in labor before - I packed the hospital bag, took a nice shower, etc. But, I wasn't in terrible pain. I think if I was - I would go right in.

EL25 It's labors like your that give me hope. Smile

  • I hope to be induced so that I don't have to worry about all that but I'm pretty sure that once my water breaks I will head to the hopsital b/c the dr's are pretty sure since my labor was pretty fast the last time that it will be even quicker this time.  I will also need to make sure that we get our dd to someone's house before going to the hospital.

  • If I am at home if/when my water breaks I would definitely take a shower and kill some time if I wasn't having major contractions.  If it were to happen at work it would be a different story.  I am thinking it might not be a bad idea to have an extra change of clothes either in my car or at work just in case.  I have heard stories of women that have had to walk around in wet pants because they went straight from work to the hospital.

  • A shower is fine...but don't spray any water directly on your kitty...and don't use soaps down there b/c there is a higher risk of infection after your water breaks.

You're not crazy...I want to at least start out looking presentable...I may have a slim chance of looking even remotely decent once the baby comes! LOL!

  • My husband has a 3-4 hour drive back home if my water breaks during the week so I plan on staying home as long as possible because I don't want to go into the hospital with out him. My sister will be staying with us at this time just in case I can't wait for him. So yes I plan on showering and getting ready before I head to hospital.

  • I plan on showering before heading to the hospital too.  We live 5 minutes away, so it shouldn't be a problem.

  • I don't have a plan yet!!

Right now it's 1. Eat and 2. Freak out!

    lol

  • Whether my contractions start first or water breaks first, I plan to shower, eat a good sturdy meal, and try to labor at home until I can't anymore or until we reach the 5-1-1 rule that they taught us in class.
  • You should go get it checked for colour, odour etc. as these are indicators of stress for the baby (greenish water with a strong odour is a sign that the baby is in stress and has had a bowel movement)...we were taught to go in right away, and the TACO acronym:

T = Time that your water broke

    A = Amount of fluid (i.e. 1 litre etc.)

    C = colour

    O - Odour

If you live close they will likely let you go home if you are not dilated much, but you shouldn't take too long to get checked once water breaks.

  • Just keep in mind that even after you shower, more fluid is going to come out with each contraction (or at least in my experience). Just something to think about.
  • I find this amusing because my water broke both times in the middle of the night. Both times it came with excrutiating pain. I could barely wipe up and throw on some clothes. Plus, the stuff that comes out of you with the baby, yea, gross. That's the shower I'm most needing, the one right after.
  • If my water breaks and I'm having contractions we are out the door. There are two ways to get to the hospital, it's about 8 miles from our house- but both ways COMPLETELY SUCK and can be totally jammed with traffic no matter what time of day or night it is. So, in order to keep from screaming at my husband to drive on the sidewalk, we'll leave ASAP.

  • If I go into labor on my own and my water breaks, then I'll start timing contractions and head to the hospital after I have packed the car. We live an hour and 20 minutes from the hospital.

As of yesterday though, I have an induction scheduled for May 28th... I am hoping I make it to that date without going into labor on my own, since my last birth was incredibly fast (I was induced at 40 weeks due to high blood pressure/swelling. Had no progress when I got to hospital at 4 pm, delivered her with no meds at 8 pm) and I don't want to give birth on the side of the highway. I am actually terrified of this - hence the reason I took my Dr. up on the induction.

  • If I'm not at home, I'm going home first. Assuming I can handle standing/walking on my own, I plan to shower, put on makeup (yes, I'm one of those people), etc. Make sure the cats are fed and I'll give them a lot of attention. Throw any last minute things into the hospital bag and wait for DH to get home (if he's not already). Then head out.?

Oh, and I plan to eat as much as I can without feeling sick. I know once I'm at the hospital I'm going hungry, so I want to make sure I have something to fuel me other than ice chips and popsicles. ?

Sorry! The nest freaked out for a minute. I was trying to quote HisLobster because that was my experience too.  My water broke around dinner time & I didn't go into "active" labor until 3pm the next day.  I had contractions but they weren't rthymic so I ended up waiting it out at home and going in to L & D the next morning. All night & the next day until they induced me my water kept gushing every few hours, usually without warning.  Again, just something to think about.

  • i live about 45 minutes to an hour away from the hospital so im thinking we will have to rush to get there. i bought a new mattress pad protector too just incase it happens while i am asleep so all we have to do is take it off and throw it away or wash it when we get home

i wish i lived closer to the hospital

  • Depends how I feel. My big thing is making sure I dont miss my chance at an epi. Either way I will shower before birth bc everyone gets a private shower at my hospital so if its at home or there, i wont have to be covered in gunk lol
  • You ladies do realize that when your water breaks, it's not just one gush and that's it...it keeps coming.

Mine broke on it's own at the doctors office on my due date. Because we live 1 1/2hrs away, we got admitted at the hospital. My contractions didn't begin until later...

Same here.  I wish I had showered before I took off to the hospital when my water broke with DD.  I did stop and eat something though before I left and was glad I did.  I was over 22hrs in labor.

  • I live fairly close to the hospital (about 10 mins away). I hope I could shower before heading to the hospital but I don't know if I will have time. I'm abit worried becasue both my mom and grandma had really fast labours. My mom always had her water break at the hospital and had the baby in her arms with in 30-45 mins. And i'm one of 6 kids. My grandma had 2 at home and one in the car before my grandpa insisted she start the trip to the hospital earlier. So even though I hope I take after both my mom and grandma this might prevent me from having a shower before heading to the hospital
  • I don't think you're crazy.  I plan to do something similar (showering, etc.)  Our hospital is only a 10 minute drive.  Plus my DH will most likely be at work, so I'd have to wait for him to get home anyway.
