Baby Names

Just thinking...

Hubs and I plan on trying for our first kid in about a year and surprisingly we totally agree on names. What a miracle right?! We plan on trying for two of our own kids and adopting 2 children. We had a list of possible names and wanted to just see what everyone thought. I know it's early, but it's fun to think about. I'll give reasons why we picked that name...

Girls Names

Sky Marie- H once had a very vivid dream that we had a baby girl and he looked intently into her eyes and they were blue as the sky and woke up and said we have to name our first daughter sky. Marie is a middle name that has been passed down maternally for many generations.

Kyrie Evangeline- Kyrie is greek and is pronounced Keer e ay, I know it's a bit different but I think it's beautiful, Evangeline is my great grandmother's name

Isabelle Selah- this name has significance because I lived in Guatemala and fell in love with this sweet little girl named Isabelle who was living in an orphanage there and Selah is a term in Psalms referring to a rest in the music or peace

Boys Names

Julian Isaiah- Hubs really likes the name Julian because he feels like it's a classy name that's not around much and I liked Isaiah so we put them together?

Kael Hixon- Hubs was a religious studies major and studied angels and loved the name Kael and thinks Hixon is a strong name.

Re: Just thinking...

  • I actually like Sky and of course I love Evangeline.  I'm not a fan of Kyrie.  There is little to no chance people will be able to prononce it correctly.  Isabelle Selah is a beautiful name.  I like Julian Isaiah but no so much with Kael Hixon.

  • They are all interesting and well thought out.?
  • They're all very nice names and I like the thoughts behind them

One thing I'm not sure if you're aware of (I mean you probably are, but I just wanted to let you know in case you aren't), is that the Kyrie Eleison is the title of a prayer said during every Catholic Mass. Nearly every Catholic she ever meets will associate the name with that prayer.

Of course, that doesn't make it a bad name, but it is something you probably want to know about if you use it :)

edit: Also, I think (and I could be wrong), that Kyrie is Greek.

  • My childhood nanny has a "keer ee ay" only it's spelled Kyriae so it's a little more phoenetic. I think it's beautiful :)

I like Julian Isaiah. My MIL was trying to get us to consider Julian, but it sounds too similar to Jillian and that's a top girl name for us. I've always liked the name Isaiah. It's under used and I'm not sure why...

    Isabelle is very pretty. ?

  • I lived in a tiny little town called Selah. I always thought the name was pretty.

Evangeline is different but very pretty.?

  • I like them all except Isabella Selah... does not flow well to me. Good luck!
  • I love Kyrie even though I've never heard it used as a name before.  I probably like it because it reminds me of my singing days (I used to study music so I sang a lot of standard latin sacred texts).  Most people probably wouldn't pronounce it correctly, but I still think it's nice.  I also love Julian for a boy, but my DH shot that one down because he thinks it sounds too feminine lol.

  • That is very impressive that you have already agreed on the names!

This.  It's not just Catholics either - I grew up Anglican and we sung Kyrie Eleison, and I believe the Lutherans do too.

I think based on the link above that if it were me I would do some thorough research on this before using it (although it's beautiful).  If I am translating correctly (Greek -> Latin -> English), Kyrie is the "Lord" or "O Lord" part of the prayer.  I am not sure I would name a child "Lord".  Eleison, "have mercy" or "is merciful" might be nice though.  Anyway... that's just me.

It's not just you.  You're right about the meaning, and the idea of naming a kid "Lord" weirds me out, too.

And don't forget the 1980's song from Mr. Mister called "Kyrie"  - Kyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel.  Kyrie eleison, through the darkness of the night...

At least that's what I would think of every time I heard the name.
