Gum replacement

My DH and other pregnant friends tell me I can't/shouldn't chew gum. What can I have when I want to freshen my mouth but can't brush? Are mints ok? Is any gum ok?

Re: Gum replacement

  • Just curious, why can't you chew gum when pregnant?

  • Think about your question.  Why wouldn't gum be okay?

  • Are you sure she said you shouldn't chew gum? Maybe she meant you shouldn't swallow gum when you are pregnant because it might go straight to the baby and it would get into his/her hair and gum +hair isn't good combination...I would double check ;)
  • of all the things i have heard on first tri, this is definitely on top of the stupid questions list.
  • Sometimes gum is the only thing that keeps me from barfing.
  • Wow. Stop listening to people.
  • chewing gum- really curbed my ms- I'd best be careful though- My gum is bad--- but-- mmm... I cant---schtop---chewin it---
  • You can chew gum, you just can't chew gum and walk at the same time. Your balance is already off so...
  • no, they are right.  if you chew gum, it might pull a filling in a cavity out.  if that comes out, then the baby falls out through the cavity hole.

you CAN chew gum if you are cavity free.

  • Of course you can chew gum, it just has to be the watermelon flavor. That's the only kind that won't hurt the baby's ability to play sports in high school. Sheesh.

this made me laugh so hard-- I swallowed my gum- Hope it will be ok!

    (Sigh)

  • i'm chewing gum as we speak :)

i think what they meant is that your gums and teeth may be much more sensative during the pregnancy, but you can still chew gum

i think i just peed in my pants!

  • This may be one of the stupidest things I have ever heard.
  • WTF, you can't ask a stupid question like this and then log off with out giving us the brilliant reasoning behind it.
  • you could try smoking cigarettes instead?

you could try smoking cigarettes instead?

Yep- Better than chewing gum- Or eating Mayo-

Have a drink too while you're at it!

  • Chewing gum is fine, it's blowing bubbles with the gum that is dangerous to your baby's health.
  • Chew it, just dont swallow it... you dont want your baby to have a bubble butt....

I am now officially dead. Dead and buried.

  • The gum is fine. You need to be looking for a DH/ friend replacement.
  • Wow. I was basically concerned about the artificial sweetners in the gum. I guess because of your reactions, it's fine. Thanks for your help.

  • Think about the actual amount of artificial sweetener that you would have to ingest to have any affect on your baby....

I drank Diet Coke practically every day I was PG and nothing happened. Listen to your doctor and not these other people

I don?t think there is enough artificial sweetener in gum to be worried. unless you chew several packs a day.

  • It is very important because being PG will cause your breath to smell like catshiit.

So, since gum is obviously on the same outs list as caffeine, haircolor, cold cuts, and drinking bleach, you will have to start carrying a bottle of water, toothpaste, and toothbrush around EVERYWHERE.

Make sure it's not Close-up, though, b/c all that spicy toothpaste might make your baby come out with red hair.

    Stick out tongue

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • I've heard the same thing from a couple people. It's only sugarless gum they are referring to... with the aspartame.
