I'm just wondering if this is a must, or if it can just be skipped? How long can you even keep them up?
I seem to be finding bedding sets I like with either super expensive or not that cute mobiles. I had originally planned on just finding a cute mobile and buying matching bedding (not a set), but now I'm not sure how long you even use the mobiles for if it would be worth doing that. What do you think?

Re: Do you really need a mobile?
Our Twin Baby + a Big Girl Blog
And with the delivery trifecra of one twin vaginal, one c-section with general anesthesia for twin B, Spencer and Sidney joined us at 35 weeks exactly on June 18.
Nah, you can skip it. IMO, the crib should be a place where the baby sleeps, not a place for it to stare up at some toy in amazement.
I am getting a "decorative" one (it doesn't sing or move) that we're hanging above the changing table. I just liked it
If it gives the baby something to look at while I'm changing her then double awesome.
my DS LOVED his mobile - we have the dreams in sight mobile which is great b/c baby can see it even in the dark. DS would stare at that thing for a long time- long enough for me to take a shower and get dressed while he hung out in the crib... it was a life saver for me. We got a 2nd one to use with the twins.
he used it until he could pull up - about 8mos - totally worth it for us.

if you get one- don't stress about finding one that matches so much-but one that will turn on it's own (not just hang there) and be entertaining.... a nice music or white noise feature is great to have, too - b/c most can be used after you take down the mobile, too.
we don't have one. we'll be using a sound sleeper next to the crib when she's still little for noise, and i just hung butterflies from the cieling for her to look at if she wants. if you don't like traditional mobiles like me, there's other options out there, just google it.
It's a GIRL!!
If you follow the Montessorian method of development, they use different mobiles at different stages - black and white at first to help your baby focus and then as your baby grows and is more mobile and learning to reach and grab, one that he won't damage/hurt himself with that encourages that development.
We actually had two: one on the crib (Tiny Love Symphony) and one over the changing table.
The one over the changing table always entertained DS during diaper changes and getting dressed that we rarely had any issues with that. We left that up until he was 2. The one on the crib, while it's not the most attractive thing, was great entertainment while he was in bed, even if it wasn't on.
I wouldn't do it without them.
From a developmental standpoint, mobiles - especially those with contrasting colors or bright colors - help with the development of sight. It gives their eyes something to concentrate on and the fascination with the contrasting colors, movement, etc builds connections in their brain.
Having said that other activities during the day which help them focus their sight will have the same result.
I would opt perhaps for a more simple mobile that is less pricey but still have nice bright or contrasting colors.
i just made one last week.
sorry it's not clicky, i'm on a mac:
