Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Do you think it's "wrong" to fly w/ a baby in first class?

E and I are flying to Ohio this weekend... I booked the ticket using miles and (go figure) it was the same amount of miles for first or coach. So of course I booked first class.?

I mentioned this to a friend this week and she told me I was pretty gutsy having a baby in the first class cabin and she hoped I didn't get too many ugly looks from business travelers.

This will be Elise's 5th flight and she's done excellent on every flight prior. I'm really not worried about her at all... and we're flying with my mom who will be very helpful.

And honestly... IMO flying with a baby gets you ugly looks no matter what cabin you're in... no one wants to sit near a screaming baby (including myself!!)

wdyt? Should I have booked coach? I don't really think so.... ?

  • You shouldn't feel bad at all! You'll be much more comfortable with a baby in first class than coach. Don't worry about it one bit. I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

ps. I have an Elise too!

  • Nah, don't worry about it. Like you said, you'll probably get a few ugly looks when people first see that you have a baby, but if Elise has flown before, she'll be fine.

  • We get upgraded alot and people give us looks sometimes when we show up in jeans and shorts, like we don't quite "belong" LOL. But who cares. We don't.
  • I just had this discussion last night with DH, since we're flying to Oregon in July, first class both ways (same reason as you).  He thought it was unfair to the other people who sit in first class to get away from the babies, but honestly, a screaming kid is probably going to be heard from no matter where you sit.  And you said that your DD was a good flyer.  I wouldn't worry about it.  You paid for the seats, just like they did.  You have every right to be there, plus it's nice to have more space when you have a LO sitting on your lap.

  • I would only be annoyed if it was a redeye and I was trying to get some sleep before a meeting. I'm sure you'll be fine.
  • Umm no first class people are not "more important" or better than anyone else so having a baby in first class to me is the same as having a baby in coach except you will probably be a lot more comfy!
  • No, I don't think it should be any different in 1st class or coach. Unless there is some kind of policy that babies cannot fly up there I would not worry about it. I don't pay attention to dirty looks - that is their own issue. If she doesn't do well on the flight, simply apologize to the other passengers (same as you would if you were in coach). But I am sure she'll do fine. And so will you - enjoy the treats!

  • If you work for an airline and you fly on your free pass, and you are flying with kids under 12 (I think that is the cut off) , they will not put you in first class for this reason. But, you don't work for an airline so enjoy it!

Haha, that's kind of funny. Dh does work for a commercial airline, so I know all about the non-revving rules. but we're not non-revving so the rules don't apply!!! :)?

Funny! I used to work for Delta...

  • Dont feel bad!  Like you said, your going to get dirty looks regardless.  Besides, if it uses the same amount of points to fly 1st class as it does coach, you might as well fly 1st class!
  • The other passengers don't really get to choose. If they wanted to control who they sit next to, they should buy up the whole 1st class cabin. Enjoy the extra room and shorter bathroom lines!
