how to change diapers in the car?

I wish I would have gotten a different diaper bag....mine has a big bulky pad attached, it's like you unzip the pocket and the changing pad folds out.

Anyway, can't change him in the backseat bc of the carseat. If I change him in the front (console separating the 2 front seats) the stupid diaper bag takes up half the space where his head should go.

its a RAV 4 and i'm hoping that the front seat folds all the way forward so I can change him there when sitting in the back, but I'm not sure if it does yet.

where do you change your baby?

  • backseat or back of SUV.

  • We have an SUV... when the weather is warmer we change her in the far back with the back open. When it was coled in the back seat next to her carseat. It was a pain with the leather because she kept sliding into the seat back!

  • Usually in the trunk or back of the hatchback.

  • We ususally change her in the front seat and put the diaper bag on the floor. She's getting big, so it's not so comfy for her, we usually put a pad/blanket down for her to lay on.
  • When it's cold (since my guy is still little), I put him across my lap with a changing pad underneath. It's hard though because he's getting long and my lap isn't that big, lol! When it isn't too cold out I just use the front seat of my car or climb into the back of the van. (I have an Odyssey...) I have the Vera Bradley diaper bag and it came with a quilted pad that I love!
  • My front seat folds forward flat, so that works well for us.  You could always consider getting a thin changing pad to put in your diaper bag instead of using the one that comes with your bag.  It's more to carry around, but might be worth it?

My sister managed to change my DD *in* her carseat while she was watching her, but my sister is wonderwoman ~ I don't think the average mom is capable of such feats!

  • Front seat of my car.
  • I've only had to do it once, but the front passenger seat worked ok. Is there any way that you can remove the changing pad - maybe with a seam ripper?

when you do this in the backseat do you have the door open? where are you sitting?

i feel like there is no room for both of us in the backseat and I can't lean over his carseat which is in the middle.

  • backseat in the space between the car seat and the next seat (does that make sense).  But DD is super short - at birth she was 17 inches and she is only 19 inches now....
  • I change her the back of our CR-V, but I've only had to do it a handful of times.  Sometimes I use the changing pad, but I think its easier and more comfortable for her to do it on a receiving blanket (these aren't blow out poohs, just regular wet diapers).  I don't sit down, I just stand up and do it.

  • I carry around an extra recieving blanket w/me to use for a mat in the car or to put down on a public changing table.

I was putting the passenger seat down..but mine doesnt go all the way down so it is harder now that she is longer.

I am glad the spring weather is starting to shine through. I live in NH, so changing in the car has really been a challenge!

  • I change her in the trunk on a receiving blanket.  When she was smaller, I changed her on my lap but she's too long for that now.

  • I have never had to change DD in the car... I have at a mall, at many friends' houses and at a restaurant, but never the car.  I don't know if it's chance, because we cloth diaper, because we haven't done long car trips yet...

BRU does sell individual changing pads - we got one for my mom to have at her house.  But often I don't even use the changing pad with the diaper bag - I just use a receiving blanket.
