Baby Names

Do you like the name Blake?

I have always liked this name but thought it sounded best as a middle name. Since DH wants to use a family name as the middle name, I have been considering it as a first and kind of like it. DH's only problem with it is that it is only 1 syllable. He thinks it sounds unfinished or like it should be short for something else (which it isn't that I've ever heard). What do you think?

(oh and this would be for a boy ... I always feel the need to mention that since I have no idea what boy names are now being used for girls)

Ha - yes b/c my cousin may be using it for a girl. I like Blake for a first name...I don't think it sounds unfinished.

  • I like the name Blake a lot, I've also heard the name Blakely(sp?) before if you wanted to extend it.
  • I think of it as a girl's name for some reason.
  • I love it, but our last name starts with a hard "c" sound so I can't ever use it.
  • I like it as a first name.  I knew a Blake in high school and he was HOT!! lol

PP mentioned Blakely - which I've heard as a girl's name.

  • I like the name. Its going to be my nephew's middle name. Depending on the other name, it may flow better as a middle name.?

  • I like the name Blake
  • I don't love it but I don't hate it. This may sound odd, but I think the BL part (not the -ake part,) seems feminine to me. B/c I like a lot of other names ending in the K sound (Luke, Erik, Jake, Zack, Mark, Mike, Jack...) But Blake seems just sliiiiiiigtly less masculine to me. Maybe I'm weird, I don't know.

  • I really like the name Blake and know a few little boys with the name.  I can't recall the middle names used but if you're using a family name, it doesn't really matter :)

  • yes as a nn but not as a stand alone name. i agree with your husband.

  • I absolutely LOVE the name Blake! It is my all time favourite boys name. The only problem is that DH thinks it sounds weak. I think it is definitely a stand alone name, just like Mark, Luke, and John.

just curious ... what could it be a nn for?

  • I think it's fine by itself. I definitely think it's better for a boy than for a girl.

  • It's ok. I don't hate it or love it. I knew a Blake in high school and he reminds me of Adam on American Idol lol.?
  • I met a baby Blake a few years ago and my first reaction was eh.  But now he's my favorite little boy in the world (after my own ds) and I think it is wonderful.
  • I like it.  I was going to be named Blake if I had been a boy.  :)

  • My cousin just named her little girl Blayke!

  • I do.  It is actually my DH's name.  It suits him.  I think it is a masuline name and do not like it for a girl.  His middle name is a family name. (his mom's maiden name)  Blake Elliott Cripe is his full name.  I like it.
  • My 2 all time favorite boys names are Blake and Dillon. My husband shot down both saying they names of kids who get in trouble. So we are settling on Connor if its a boy.
  • I'm not a huge fan.  Maybe because I associate it with some girls' names, but it just sounds like a wimpy boy to me.
