1st Trimester

How far along did you still see your Yolk Sac?

Okay so I had my first u/s today to confirm I was in fact just over 9 weeks pregnant. Everything went great, the baby's heart was beating and the tech said the baby was the size it should be and that everything was good. The only weird part was (or at least I thought it was weird) was that we could still see the yolk sac. She assured me that it's normal and that it'll go away by week 12 but when i read online all the articles I see say that it goes away at week 7... so i'm just wondering what the real truth is?

So, did you have an early ultrasound later than 7 weeks and if you did, did you see your yolk sac?

  • Definitely listen to your doc/ u/s tech.  Anyone can post things online, so someone could be pulling that right out of their butts.  The doc/tech knows what they're talking about.  If there was a reason to be worried, they'd let you know.

  • the stuff I have read on pregnancy websites says that the yolk sac is what gives the baby nutrients until the placenta is fully developed, which happens some where around the end of the first trimester. I read that in one of my week by week thingies.

I would imagine it is normal to still see it about this time. But if you are worried you could always call your doctor.

  • Yeah that's what I think too, I was just hoping I'd find someone else who also saw one in their us

Wish I could tell you, but I don't get my first ultrasound until 12 weeks. :/

  • I had a u/s today and my yolk sac was still there.

thankyou for telling me :) I actually looked up placenta on wikipedia and it does say that it's not fully developed until week 12-13 which is what my tech said so I feel better :)

    thanks to everyone!

  • I had an ultrasound at 8w1d and there was still a yolk sac.  Trust the dr. I wouldn't worry.
  • I had one today at 10w and I saw the yolk sac.  The doc said it would be reabsorbed in a few weeks.

  • The yolk sac was still very prominent at my 8 week ultrasound:

  • It was there (but much smaller) at my 14w4d ultrasound.  At me 18 w ultrasound, there wasn't one.  I think they disappear sometime around 14-15 weeks.
  • I had an US yesterday. It was small, but still there. Doc just said "that will go away eventually".

  • I think it also my depend if the baby is blocking it in the picture. I could see mine at 6 1/2 weeks but haven't since.

  • I believe mine was there at 7 week appt. which I was told was normal.
  • I had my first ultrasound on Tuesday, at 10 weeks 5 days. My OB did my U/S and there was a yolk sac, he said that's something they like to see. My ultrasound was totally normal and everything looked healthy. I wouldn't worry...

Side note, I am going to UC Davis Medical Center (California), which is known for it's excellent doctors, patient care and has the lowest rates of vaginal tearing, lowest rates of epidurals, lowest rates of c-sections and highest rates of breast feeding in the state. I feel like I am in extremely good hands, that's why I am sharing the info he gave me.

    Good luck :)
