3rd Trimester

1 hour glucose test question

I figured I would ask you ladies this question as more of you would have already taken this test.  I am scheduled to take my 1 hour glucose in about 3 weeks when I am 26 weeks before my next prenatal appointment.  My doctor told me that I don't have to fast but I overheard some ladies talking about the test at my yoga class.  They were discussing what you should/should not eat (like stay away from OJ?) or if you should just fast anyway etc.  Anyone have any experiences to suggest?  I have seen often on here that many people fail the 1 hr and have to take the 3 hr test.  Just looking for some feedback.  TIA!

Re: 1 hour glucose test question

  • I had mine right away at 8:40am, so all I drank was water and I had a plain bagel with plain cream cheese. You don't have to fast, just NO SUGAR!! LOL.

My OB told me I didn't need to fast either so that morning I had a Nurtra Grain bar.  Well I failed my 1 hour and had to take the 3 hour and passed. So that being said, if I could redo the 1 hour I would have fasted.

    My sentiments exactly.

  • thanks ladies...I definitely think no sugar is a must.  :)  But I hope to do it in the morning as to avoid eating or drinking anything significant.

  • You'll get a lot of different opinions here. I recommend to do whatever your doctor instructed.

I actually had a surprise GT. No one told me in advance that I would be having it at the visit. So, naturally, I had eaten some cookies in the waiting room. I told my doctor, and she told me it wouldn't affect the test. I passed with flying colors. Since you are able to prepare, I would eat normally - but focusing on high protein, high complex carb foods.

BTW - BRING A SNACK! I thought I was going to pass out by the end of the hour and reeeeeally needed food. Just some cheese/crakers or nuts/dried fruit would be fine.

  • Avoid carb heavy meals the night before...I did mine the day after Easter, ate way too much and had dessert at like 8 that night before.   I did fast too - from like 9pm on...but ate way too much crap that day.  Failed with a 175...My doc said there was no way I would pass the 3 hour and I did, perfectly!! I swear it was what I at.
  • Having done the 3-hour test this morning, WHICH SUCKED!!!!, I too would not have eaten the apple danish nor drank the cranberry juice before taking the 1-hour test (breakfast number 2).  The test is mostly to see how your body reacts to the stupid drink, not to every stupid thing you put into your body in the preceding 24 hours.

Did I say the 3-hour test SUCKED?  Avoid it at whatever cost.

Ditto.  My 1 hr was also at 330 in the afternoon.  I highly recommend NOT doing that.  Take it as the 1st appointment in the morning.

  • Working in the lab gives me insight.  DO NOT DRINK ANY JUICES, EAT ANY CARBS, OR GO IN THE AFTERNOON.  I say this b/c if you don't want to do the 3hr tolerance you want to pass.  Do it early in the am and only drink water.  If you have eaten carbs or other sugars your glucose will already be higher than normal fasting but since they don't draw a fasting to compare it to, it's more difficult.  So when I do mine in 2 weeks at work, I will be fasting....NOTHING at all to try to reduce the chances for failure.  B/c all you have to have is a glucose of over 140-150 to fail.  Good luck to all!
  • I have had 2 this pregnancy. One and the beginning and one on Monday. I didn't fast. I ate what I always eat. I was lucky enough to not have to drink that orange stuff that they sometimes give you. They told me to drink 16 oz of coke or sprite within 15 minutes and then come in one hour later and have my test. Both of mine came out fine and they were in the afternoon. Don't stress about it. Just go about your day like you always would.
  • Yup the 3 hour sucks! I passed it with my 1st 2 and failed it with my last one, and this one. Actually having GD was/is not that bad...I did the diet and exercise, as I refused to take insulin (there is no study out there that says whether or no the stuff they use to preserve the insulin may or may not harm the baby).

    Good luck!

  • Some tests are different so if your doc said not to fast then do your normal routine.  If your body is working like normal then you should be able to eat or drink WHATEVER you want before taking the test and your body will regulate all the suger and send it where it needs to go!

  • BTW, I have had the test twice.

The first time was a surprise at 8 weeks so I totally ate my normal breakfast.  I passed.

The second test I knew about, ate a donut & and a glass of juice the morning of the test.  I passed again.

A plain bagel's carbs break down to sugar and would have an effect on a GD's sugar levels.

  • I had mine the day after Easter. I had Ovaltine (I'm addicted) and toast with jelly for breakfast and I passed.

However, had I not passed, and had to take the 3 hour, I totally would have been kicking myself.

  • My paperwork said to fast 2 hours before test.
  • My Dr's instructions were to have a balanced meal within two hours before.  My test was at 9am, so at about 7:30 I had a dry piece of toast, a piece of turkey bacon and an apple.  I passed.
  • My doc told me to eat regular so I did and I failed the 1 hr.  I go in for my 3 hour on Friday.
  • I fasted for over 12 hours for the 1 hour, and failed.

I passed the 3 hr today.... not sure about all of it.
