Hospital Feedback?

I've recently heard some negative feedback about labor and delivery at Beaumont in Royal Oak? Any feedback on delivery at Troy? This is my first time posting on the bump, I was an active knottie back in 06/07. :o) My OB/GYN delivers at both hospitals as well as St.Joseph's in pontiac, and my DH and I are trying to figure out what will be best.

Re: Hospital Feedback?

  • What kind of bad feedback have you heard?  I didn't deliver at Royal Oak, but I have a number of friends and relatives who have and they all have nothing but good things to say.

I delivered out of Troy and I was really happy.  They're all private rooms and they recently redid them so they have flatscreen tvs.  When I delivered, they had just installed them, so they hadn't quite figured it out, but the nurse was telling me that they were getting wireless keyboards so you could access the internet.  They do have wireless, so you can hop on-line while there.  The nurses were nice.  I thought I heard that while you're in labor, there's one nurse per patient.  Don't quote me on that, but the nurses I had were with me quite a bit, so I really can't imagine they had another patient.  What I liked is I only had 2 different nurses.  They work 12 hour shifts, so I had one lady in the am and another in the pm.  Since I was on LDR for over 24 hours, I had the same am nurse and the same pm nurse stay with me throughout.  After I had DS, they moved me to the postpartum room.  The nurses there were extremely sweet and very helpful to us, being first time parents and having absolutely no idea what we were doing.  DS was extremely gassy the one night, so the nurse came in, showed us a ton of different ways to help gas and then went on to give us some other pointers about all sorts of stuff.

  • Not sure what neg. feedback you heard but I had DS at Royal Oak 5 years ago and have nothing but good things to say.  I will be delivering at Troy this time, so I am interested in hearing some differences as well.
  • I just delivered (via c-section) at Troy and LOVED it.  The nurses were WONDERFUL, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience -- they were super patient with my 9 million questions, showing DH how to do everything since I was stuck in bed for the first couple of days, and about getting anything I/we needed.  I would highly recommend going there.  Do you have any specific concerns?

**During my pregnancy, I stayed overnight at both RO and Troy -- I think I would have been happy delivering at either one, but definitely preferred Troy, just because it seems a bit newer.

  • Thanks for the feedback! I have not had great experiences with the ER at Royal Oak, and recently had a friend who had her daughter there via emergency C-section, and a number of things did not go well for her. She reported that the staff treated her very poorly, and that the attending physician (not sure why someone from her own practice couldn't get there in time?) was curt and rude and made the emergency C much more stressful. She and DH are extremely upset with the hospital as a whole. Have only heard very positive things about Troy, but just wanted to know if the difference is really worth driving an extra 15/20 minutes. Not many of my friends have had children yet, so I am lacking many experienced oppinions! Thanks again!
  • I LOVE Troy Beaumont.  I delivered both my kids there and couldn't of had a better experience.  The rooms are nice, private and the couch you can actually sleep on (husband's bed for the night).  The nurses were great, and very helpful.  I did go to Royal Oak for some tests and didn't like the unit there.  It seemed old and I didn't have a good feeling with the staff.  They seemed like they didn't want to be there.
  • I was on hospital bedrest at Royal Oak for 10 weeks with DD.  I had to deliver there because of their NICU.  They took such great care of me, I would absolutley deliver there again.  They re-did their rooms as well, all 3 (antepartum, l&d, postpartum) were new with flat screen tv's and wifi.

I'm a nurse at Troy Beaumont so my original plan was to deliver there, but because of my complications I couldn't.  My sis has delivered there and they took GREAT care of them.  They were all really nice to us the one time I was there when my water broke at 24 weeks.

I recommend both hospitals.  Troy's is much smaller which a lot of people prefer, but I thought my care was just as good at Royal Oak.  It is like a baby factory there though, I swear there were like 40 babies in the well baby nursery at night.  We would walk by it on our way to the NICU to see DD.

  • Hmmmm...well, it all depends, really, on what kind of birth you are looking for.  If it's the "typical" american "I'm gonna get that epidural as soon as physically possible!" type birth, any of the three hospitals should do you just fine, and with flat screens to keep you occupied until you get to complete or get the cesarean, at least it's higher def!.  However, be aware that both Beaumonts are getting closer and closer to a 50% cesarean rate.

However, if you are looking for a less typical birth (read, low interventions), you may be happier at St. Joes.  I would strongly recommend, especially if you are planning a non-medicated birth, that you avoid Royal Oak, and if you ARE planning a non-medicated birth that you seek out a practitioner who knows how to support one (the midwives at Troy are pretty good), or else get yourself to a childbirth education class that is out of the hospital, and get a doula...and maybe St. Joes is a good place to go.  I would used to say that Troy was the best place for non-interventive birth, because they didn't have residents there to "practice" on you constantly, but as they are starting the med school program with OU--I wouldn't say so anymore!  Also, remember, that if you choose to say no thank you to the eye goop and/or vit K shot, St. Joes is DEFINATELY the place to go, as Beaumont will try to bully you and give you inaccurate info.  :(  Really sad that they take away informed consent that way, but I have seen it with several clients and friends as well, first hand.

  • Oh, and as far as breastfeeding goes, St. Joes is the best of the three as far as staff interfering with breastfeeding/giving good support and info when it comes to breastfeeding.
  • I delivered at RO Beaumont six months ago, and had a great experience. I love that they have an OB Triage, so you don't have to eff around with the dopes in the ER. (I had to go back 5 days pp for preeclampsia, and the regular ER there SUCKS. Don't use it to make your decision...you won't be anywhere near it.) I really liked my labor and delivery nurse, Katie, and while I wasn't very happy with the anesthesia team, my overall experience was very positive. I didn't feel like drugs or interventions were pushed on me at all, the epidural was my choice. The whole 'teaching hospital' aspect gets a little annoying though; residents everywhere! And they want to help, jump in, etc. But, that's how we get good doctors right? Anyway, the nursing staff is AWESOME; all the nurses I had throughout my stay were great. The recovery rooms are huge and private; they used to be double rooms so you really get a lot of space for all your crap and guests. DS slept in our room both nights too; and the follow-up care was excellent. The food is always pretty good too, as far as cafeteria grub goes; there's a Starbux in the lobby too, lol.

We actually live about 1/4 mile from another hospital, and at least four others are closer than Beaumont, but we still choose to make the trip..it's a great hospital to have a baby. I know they do tours so that maybe that will help make the decision. My bf delivered twice via c-sec at Troy recently and that's a good hosp too. GL ;-)

  • Thank you all very much for the specific feedback! I am a high-risk pregnancy, and I should have specified this before. After your comments I believe I will be scheduling my pre-birth classes at Troy, as most of you with C-sections had a very positive experience there. It's a tad farther from home for me, but it sounds like it will be very worth the 15 minutes. Not to mention, I like the idea of being at a smaller hospital. I DO plan on having an epidural if we are able to deliver vaginally, I have never had any attachment to wholistic birthing etc, but understand that it is for some people. I am extremely comfortable with OB and her partners so I will be sticking with them, not to mention with the hightened risk of C-section, I would prefer to have the same person with me through the whole process . Thanks again!
  • I delivered at RO Beaumont and have nothing but rave reviews.  DS and I received outstanding care.
