I don't think it's a girl's name at all. It's a surname, which almost always sound completely unfeminine, imo. I also think it's kind of weird to name your kid--boy or girl--a surname that isn't from your own family (Hollis may be for you; I'm just commenting generally).
As far as a personal association goes, it makes me think of a guy my DH went to high school with. We called probably 85% of those guys by their last names (big Catholic boys' school -- lots of Patricks, Josephs, Johns, etc. to get confused with each other), and the one we called Hollis (fn Patrick) was hilarious, but very unruly.
I met a little girl named Hollis a while back and love it. It is the name of a town nearby so I could never use it.
"Normal day, let me be aware of the treasured day you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart...let me hold you while I may."
I think it's pretty bad, honestly. I think of the polygamist leader on Big Love, but even if I didn't, I wouldn't like it.
I am in the "you shouldn't name your kid other people's last names" camp. If it's a name in your family, I could get behind it. Otherwise, not so much.
This makes it a lot better. I still don't really care for it for a girl, though. If I saw it on paper, I'd think it was a boy. Maybe pair it with a super-feminine mn, so she can include it on resumes and things?
Way back, like several years ago, there was a Nestie named Hollis. All I remember is that she was a pretty cool hip/vegan type . It definitely fit her but overall, I don't see it as a very girly name.
Re: What do you think of this girl name
I know a 3rd grader by that name and she is a fabulous, creative girl. (no relation..she's a student at my school).
however, it does make me think of Hollis from the HBO show "Big Love".
Good luck!

Don't like it. I'm not opposed to last names that can be first names, but Hollis seems more like a boy's name to me too.
I do like Harper, for a girl...
Ditto

It's OK. I know one boy and one girl with the name Hollis.
