I Can't Stop Poking My Baby!!

I know you are supposed to let a sleeping baby lie,  but if I don't hear a sound from him for awhile, I go and poke him. I know that I am not the only mommy who does/did this. But when do you relax a little? I feel a little crazy right now.

Re: I Can't Stop Poking My Baby!!

  • I wish I had advice for you but I don't. I know I am going to be the same way when Ryder gets here. I am sure as he gets older and you get more use to his sleeping patterns you will be fine. Hang in there.

  • I still poke donovan!
  • Nathan is 8 months old and sleeps 11-14 hours a night. I gt panicky around the 11.5 hour mark and pop my head in a lot.  No poking, but I wait until I see chest movements.

When he was a newborn, I used an Angelcare monitor. That was definitely something I never suspected to purchase.

  • I was like that too at first!  They're soooo tiny.
  • Hmm Its good to know you ladies do that so when I have my baby here I won't feel weird about having the urge to do it.
  • My mom confessed to doing the same thing to me because I slept so soundly. The only way I avoided doing it for so long (10 weeks) was that her and I slept in the recliner together, so I could feel her breath against my stomach. The trade off was that I had to have my gallbladder removed, so I'm not exactly sure it was a good deal. Smile

Now that she's in her bassinet next to our bed, I get up and check her often. Usually I can get away with just feeling her stomach rise and fall, but sometimes I have to give her a jiggle.

I never really understood how much worrying comes with motherhood.

  • I dont poke, but I do carefully watch his tummy until i see it move, and if I cant/dont see it move I will run a finger lightly on the bottom of his foot to trigger a reflex =)
  • I used to have to check on him every night before I went to bed - I'd go in with a book light and light him up and watch for him to breathe.   I think I stopped that maybe this summer or fall?  So almost 2 years of this?

Now I watch on the video monitor and if he has something on his face - like a pillow or something, I go in and take it off before I go to bed.  But otherwise, I leave him.  If he sleeps real long, I do start to watch the monitor really intently to see if his hand twitches or something.

  • I hear you! Currently I'm on an air mattress on the floor in Max's room, and if he's quiet for a while and I'm awake I reach through the crib bars and put my hand on his chest, or I stand up and lean really close to hear him breathing. Sometimes I also poke him. :)
