You can't "catch" anything from a dog right?

I told DH that I don't think illnesses are communicable between dogs and people, but he's worried now since his friend didn't mention their dog has a staph infection and?tonsillitis?until it had licked my lips.

?

So I told him I'd check with the experts!

  • Yikes. I'm not sure. I thought staph was pretty contageous. Who knows though.

  • a staph infection most def. you can.  Just like ringworm, ticks, fleas or actual worms.   I don't know about "tonsilitus" in pets but I woudlnt risk it.  I know for sure you can contact skin infections.
  • I don't know...yikes!  I would think staph could be passed...I know MRSA can & it's basically the same thing - different strain I think.

I'm trying not to get too pissed off right now thinking about it, but I'm seriously angry their dogs peed everywhere and my pets are elderly and I'm pregnant. You'd think "hey by the way my dog has a staph infection" would be the first thing you say!?

Yeah sort of!! Hate to add fuel to the fire, but my aunt almost died from a staph infection like two years ago. I wonder if there are any preventative measures they can do to make sure you don't get it?

  • Not unless you go around licking the ground where your dog shiits, if he has worms!!  Sorry, I know you loved that visual... I couldnt help it!
  • If you got some tongue action, was it at least a cute dog?

Haha then i'm definitely at risk!!! :-P?

  • There are tons of zoonotic diseases that you can get from pets.  Tons.

You have me rolling! LOL.   I would love to ask you mre questions about how you clean your yard, but I am off to bed! Night Manda

  • Staph is staph regardless of the species that has it - and some strains are definitely worse than others.  And it's a bacteria, not a virus.  You can definitely catch it from a dog (or a cat or a human or anything that has it).  Call your doc.  (And smack the sh!t out of these idiots that brought a diseased animal into your house.  WTF were they thinking???)
  • A "staph infection" in a dog is most likely referring to an opportunistic superficial skin infection that isn't likely to pass to you as an "infection". I would love to see how tonsilitis was definitively diagnosed in this dog (e.g. I am skeptical).

The kind of staph dogs have naturally and the kind humans have naturally isn't the same. You can give staph aureus to your dog (meaning MRSA-MDR in animals is passed to them by a human source) and your dog can give staph intermedius to you.

Unless you have like 3 lymphocytes in your whole body because you are immunosuppressed then you are most likely to be fine. You have a much greater chance at catching something by pushing around a grocery cart and then having a snack without washing your hands.

     Viruses are species-specific.

There are a host of zoonotic disease that you would be wise to discuss with your veterinarian (with regard to your own dog and cat). There  is no reason to freak out - these are all avoidable if you have a little education. I spend 60+ hours a week with sick animals and the rest of my time with my own pets at home. Myself an plenty of my veterinarian friends have healthy pregnancies and babies.
