i'm sure many have had similar stories...my son was put into nicu after birth and was given formula. from the stress and exhaustion i had problems producing. now my milk is in, but after 20 min or so of pumping i only produce 1 oz of milk. i have tried to bf using a nipple guard and still try every feeding but end up giving him formula to supplement.
what can i do to get him off the bottle and just nursing? he is now only one week old, so i HOPE that it is not too late to straighten out his confusion and make bf'ing a success.
Re: nipple confusion
I would definitely call a LC at your hospital or other lactation office. They can help you with tips to increase your supply so you won't need to supplement at all. I'm not able to offer any personal advice about the nipple guards or switching away from bottles, but I'd think that a LC could really help you with that. I've found them to be really helpful for me, both in the hospital and out.
Oh, I will say that a 1 week old really doesn't need much more than an ounce at one feeding, I think. Their tummies are still so small. So you may be able to get away with feeding him what you have and just doing so a little more often (maybe as much as every 1-1.5 hours for a few days). That will not only help increase your supply, but will also get him more used to the breast and he'll have less time with a bottle. Again, I'd ask someone who actually has experience with this or knows a bit more than I do, but it seems like it might work.
