Those who plan to breastfeed...question!

What are you buying now, vs. waiting to buy? I'm still reading my breastfeeding books, and I don't know anyone who breastfed in person. I missed my breastfeeding class due to $ and I'm clueless!! Thanks!

Re: Those who plan to breastfeed...question!

  • I got my pump, nursing bras, pads, lanolin, and a some bags to freeze breast milk.
  • Loading the player...
  • I bought a "Hooter Hider" (nursing shell) and I will buy some inexpensive nursing bras at target as well as a pump...I am shopping around for a good price on a pump though, incase things don't work out well, I don't want to waste $300 on a pump!
  • I waited to buy everything minus bottles and bottle liners (that depends on what you are using).  The hospital gave me a manual single pump, which I used for about 6 weeks before buying an awesome double electric (Medela PISA).  I was bound and determined to try to get everything worked out before I started pumping, which I did at about 4 weeks to build a stock pile for going back to work at 10 weeks.  This worked fine for me.
  • Get a Boppy Pillow, some nursing pads and lanolin.  You don't need anything else right away.  As long as you have your boobies you're really all set!
  • i registered for a nursing bra and some pads, although my nursing friend swears by pantyliners cut in half - she says they are much less bulky, cheaper, and absorb the same. ?i am waiting on everything else just in case though.

  • I bought a few bottles, some drop-ins, nipple cream, a few nursing pads/shields, a few nursing bras and a nursing cover. I also have some formula just in case. I didn't purchase a breast pump yet, cause I am probably going to rent one first and see what I like. Plus, who knows how the bf will work out anyways. I would say go minimal at first to see how everything works out, then you could always send DH out to get what you need afterwards.

  • I bought my pump, nursing pads, milk storage bags and breast cream. I figure that will get me started. I bought one nursing bra, but will wait and see until i buy any more. I also haven't bought any nursing "tops".. I'm waiting to see if I will need them or not.

  • I've got my pump, bottles, breast milk bags, bras, pads, bottles, liners, lanolin, and sling.  Had a lot of these things left from my first-born.  Our hospital supplied us with a lot of samples last time around so you can also give things a try and see what will work best for you.

I definitely recommend getting bras, pads, and lanolin in advance.

  • I haven't purchased anything specifically for breastfeeding yet; I won't be going back to work, so I won't need to start pumping and storing milk for quite awhile, so I don't want to spend the money for a breast pump and all the storage bags, etc. until I know that DS and I will get the hang of it.

This is what we were planning on doing anyway, but then the teacher at my BFing class said that waiting to purchase high-ticket items for breastfeeding is probably best, so that you know it's going to work out before you spend the money - so that convinced me!

  • A boppy, lanolin cream and some breast pads. Don't go overboard with the breast pads though, until you are sure you'll need a bunch. I rarely ever leaked, so I only went through 10 or so of the disposables. There's also something called 'Soothies' which are gel pads. Those were AWESOME on sore nipples. They sell them at Walgreen's and CVS.

If you plan on pumping, have some milk bags (I like Lansinoh) ready. And a pump of course (I have an Ameda Purely Yours). You can wait a bit on that stuff though.?

  • I got lanolin, nursing pads, and plan to purchase a pump, nursing bras and a few nursing camis.

If you can't take a class but have access to Netflix or your local library, you can rent an educational dvd.  We have one at home that's pretty informative and demonstrates what you need to do with step by step visuals.  Also shows poor examples so you can see the difference between the "right" way and "wrong" way.

I got the pump, nursing bras, nursing pads for my leaking boobs, boppy pillow, bottles, bottle dryer, milk storage bags, and a storage container for my bags...just to keep everything in one place in the freezer.

  • I have my boobies, nursing pads (I already have leaky boobs) and some lanolin. I dont plan to buy nursing bras until my milk comes in. Anyone who buys nursing bras before their milk comes in is just crazy! Your boobs could grow an entire size!

  • I'd call your La Leche League.  Its free to go to their meetings.

My sister bought me the glass bottle set of Born Free I wanted.  I'm thinking about making some or buying some cloth nursing pads.  Don't really like the idea of disposable stuff.  I hope to get some lanolin at one of my showers.  I should be getting a gift card to Target in a few weeks, if I haven't gotten a nursing bra/tank yet, I'll probably use that to buy one to take to the hospital.  I have my midwife appointment tomorrow.  I'm going to get my Rx for the breast pump so I can order it through the durable medical equipment company and have my insurance cover it.  I'm trying to decide between the Medela PISA or the Ameda (which I hear is the only one approved for resale).

  • I got some nursing pads, boob cream and a nursing bra. As long as you got your boobies to start you'll be just fine.
  • I'm getting a nursing tank and nursing pads now. (I also have a breast pump now, because I'll be returning to work and pumping and my insurance only covers if I buy before baby arrives). I'll buy nursing bras after my milk comes in and I know what size to buy. I'm also holding off on "nursing clothing" to decide if I feel like I need it.

See if your area has a La Leche League or other BF organization. Those meetings are usually free and I've heard very useful. Also, your hospital probably has a lactation consultant - not sure whether they are free or not.

  • Well, I have some things that I had purchased when I had my first baby (Boppy pillow, nursing covers, pump, bottles, storage bags).  So far I have purchased some nursing tanks & nursing pajamas (for the hospital), and will probably buy some nursing pads for the inevitable leakage pretty soon.

  • I got a hand pump (waiting on an expensive electric one until I know how b/f is going to go...) And I have breast pads and the boppy pillow.

I guess I should probably get some cream and I have also heard that the shields are really helpful until your body gets used to it...

Edit: My mom also got me a nursing gown...Only like $12 at Wal Mart...

  • I have needed breast pads, lansinoh cream (although my hospital provided it and I still haven't run out), boppy, storage containers, electric pump, bottles, nursing cover, and 2 nursing bras.  I have been wearing a lot of button down tops.

I had to supplement with pumped bm though in the beginning until she was up to her birthweight.  You could always buy them and leave them unopened that way if bf doesn't work out you could return them.

I got my nursing cover at uddercovers.com using the code onefree.  All I had to pay for was $7.95 in shipping.  It's plain, but it gets the job done.  I wouldn't invest in an expensive one unless you know you are continue bf.

I got my nursing bras at Walmart.  I provided a link.  They are $12 and they go up to DDD.  I wouldn't buy an expensive one until your milk comes in because you won't know what size you will be until then.

  • So far I've bought the Boppy pillow, nipple cream, breast pads, and I've ordered my breast pump through my insurance but haven't heard back on that yet.
  • I bought a pump and supplies. A couple of nursing bras to get me by (you will get bigger after baby so don't stock up yet) and that's about it.

I wish I had some Fenugreek handy (which I will this time around)

Otherwise there really isn't much that they won't give you at the hospital.

Theyll have Lanolin, nipple shields and such available for you so I wouldn't spend money on that just yet,?

DNK - YOU FREAKING ROCK! I just bought a $7 udder cover using that code. $32 bucks off. Woohoo!! Love it. Thanks!!

PS: To everyone else. Wait to buy nursing bras. Your boobs will GROW!! Oh and I used a Manual pump with DD. I couldnt afford the electric. I pumped at work and was able to breast feed for 10 months. If you can't afford the electric, I recommend the Lansinoh manual breast pump or Avent Isis. I am a SAHM Mom now, so I will get a manual again. No use spending a ton on something I won't use much.
