Cholesterol...

Can someone give me some insight into cholesterol?  My cholesterol is 167 which is within range and my HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) is 63 which is above normal.  My question is can your HDL be too high?  It's flagged on my workup as abnormal and high.  I had my b/w done through a healthfair at work and haven't had a chance to talk to my doc about it yet.

Re: Cholesterol...

  • if your HDL is high that is Good. typically its higher from exercising, etc. if your hdl is high & your overall cholesterol score is slightly high - then will tell you its within normal because the higher good cholesterol is balancing it out. does that make sense? mine was the same way at my last physical & thats what my doc told me.

  • I don't know if it can be too high but 60 and above is considered to help against heart disease because the HDL helps carry the bad cholesterol away. So, at 63 you're doing great. HTH!

  • Thanks!  I just wasn't sure if it could be too high, but you helped to explain it a little more clearly.

  • I had my lipids tested like 2 weeks ago at work.  Basically you want high HDL as possible and low LDL as possible.  H=high and L=low to make it easy to remember.  Here's the number they gave me that should be ideal:

    Total Cholestrol <120
    HDL>50
    LDL<100

Hope that helps!  As far as my result, my HDL came back 70 and LDL was 21.  My total cholestrol was just a little over 120, more like 128, maybe.

  • I've had high cholesterol for 10 years (over 230 - hereditary).

I've never been medicated or treated for it because my "ratio"  has always been great.

  • Staycee, that was the other reason because my dad has high cholestrol while his mom had diabetes.  So I tested myself because I wasn't sure if I had both or either one.  Thankfully I don't.  As long as I maintain my numbers, I should be fine.  The nurse told me my ratio was the best she's seen.

  • Hi -

Not sure where all of these numbers are coming from.  I'm a dietitian, and this is a very simple version of what we use for chol.

Total cholesterol ideally should be <200.  Yours sounds just fine.

Your ratio of HDL to LDL is what we like to look at.  You want the HDL to be as close to, if not higher than the LDL.

Ok, so my LDL is 92 and my HDL is 63.  Is this bad?

No it's not bad.  So your total is 167 and your HDL is 63.  The ratio of total/HDL is 2.65, which is good.  We look for <5.
